Pistons host the Nuggets

Essentials

  • Teams: Denver Nuggets (24-24) at Detroit Pistons (20-29)
  • Date: February 8, 2014
  • Time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Television: FSD, NBATV

What to look for

The Denver Nuggets have dual identities, which makes them a little odd. They started out the season by playing at a fast pace, but they adjusted by slowing things down in December. They played at a speed in the league’s bottom third, and the team suffered an eight-game losing streak.

The Nuggets have historically always been among the league leaders in pace because they usually run teams out of the building in the high altitudes of Denver. However, Brian Shaw opted to slow things down for the sake of teaching his team how to execute in the half court.

The experiment was viewed as somewhat of a failure, but few accounted for the strength of schedule during that stretch prior to Christmas. With the exception of the New Orleans Pelicans, every opponent Denver faced during the losing streak is in the mix for a postseason berth.

Nonetheless, in the face of adversity, Denver reverted back to what it knows best: flying up and down the court. They have progressively increased their pace in each month since December, and their offensive efficiency has picked up as well.

What’s more, the Nuggets have the horses necessary to get up and down the floor. Shaw uses players that are all roughly the same size. Their wing and interior guys can defend multiple positions and consistently beat people down the court.

The Nuggets tend to overwhelm teams that are not prepared for their style of play, especially in the confines of Colorado. Away from home though, that advantage is somewhat nullified.

The Nuggets’ pace takes a slight dip on the road because opponents are not gasping for air in the same manner as they typically do in Denver. Teams are no longer forced to matchup with Ty Lawson and Co. because their big people will not get exposed out in transition.

In turn, units with big frontlines will get their fair share of rebounds at home when playing against Denver. According to NBA.com, the Nuggets see a decrease in their rebounding percentage in road games when compared to home.

That gives the Detroit Pistons an intriguing edge tonight, given that Andre Drummond’s bunch does a fantastic job of attacking the boards for second-chance points.

The tandem of Kenneth Faried and J.J. Hickson simply does not have the size to deal with the Pistons’ frontline. The one wildcard for Denver: 3-point shooting.

If they can loosen up the Detroit defense with a few long-distance shots, it will give them an opportunity to attack the interior in the half court. Otherwise, it’s far more prudent to bet on Detroit because their failures in execution will be mitigated by their offensive rebounds.

How annoying was it when Chandler beat out Monroe for that rebound off a missed free throw. He plays with the heart of the size of a pea on defence. I can’t tell if he’s just not trying or isn’t able to play better on that end.

Monroe has been complete garbage the last two games, and if not for superhuman performances from Smith, Drummond, and Jennings, we probably don’t win those because of Monroe.

I think we are starting to see who the real Big 3 is on this team. Monroe just doesn’t fit. The cream is rising to the top and he is not. I’d start that lineup at the end for now, and trade Monroe for the best offer we can get.

      Jennings
      Stuckey
      Singler
      Smith
      Drummond

I think thats our best lineup right now. If we can upgrade at SG/SF through a Monroe trade even better. But Monroe just isn’t worth a big contract, so we do need to trade him now.

Man you have to realize/learn that it’s not you vs the guys at pistonpowered. Jennings and Smith both played well but both still made some bone head plays. Smith’s last couple of minutes of the half were frustrating as hell. Due to him forcing his shots we went from something like an 18 point lead to 12. The bright side of the victory is it looks like we are starting to learn how to win in the 4th quarter. If we could only of done so earlier in the season we might be closer to a .500 ball club and be fighting it out for a higher seed. At the moment with these last couple of wins I think we’ve gone from being closer to keeping our pick to thinking we can still make the playoffs. I still maintain these last 2 wins are fools gold until proved otherwise.

Yet Monroe was somehow -14. WTF

We’re only 3.5 games out of the 5th seed. 4.5 out of 4th seed and HCA.

All we need is a trade for Monroe to get this starting lineup right and any talent he brings back will be a bonus, and then we will be primed to make a playoff push.

      1. 2 nice victories against hobbled and hapless opponents — nonetheless, victory is victory!
      2. It’s really our “Core-Four” — not big 3. Plenty of times Moose is key; plenty of times Josh is AWOl. It’s Jennings who’s now emerging as our best player and leader of this team. Yes he is.
      3. Who is coaching the team? Doesn’t seem Mo. The move to start Singler and give Harrelson’s minutes to JJ is looking good, for these 2 wins against the hobbled. Dan used the word “Foolish” against Mo when this Singler move was made. But having a 2 that can actually shoot, well, it seems to be having a profound effect on both Jennings and Smith.
      4. Wither Bynum?
      5. Chauncey, the universe bless him, but there’s time’s he looks like Ross Perot’s running mate out there…

Monroe for Beal and Ariza is a trade I do now. Saves us a tonne of cap space in the summer. Not sure that’s a good thing with Dumars making decisions but Beal is only 20 on a Rookie deal and can light it up.
