Josh Smith on the block, but Pistons seek more than expiring contract(s)

Zach Lowe of Grantland:

Other teams say Pistons indeed shopping Josh Smith, but demanding more than just dead expirings.

You can read my thoughts at ProBasketballTalk, and I covered my thoughts on a Josh Smith trade here earlier.

Exactly. There are going to be some quality players available this offseason. At least with cap space you earn yourself a do-over.

WTF if someone will give you an expiring deal for JS pull the dang trigger epically if you plan on keeping Monroe.

It is ridiculous to seriously respond to someone interested in taking Josh Smith of our hands and say “I need more”.  Whatever GM on mushrooms that is calling to inquire about him should be handed Smith for a bag of used towels and a peck on the cheek from Joe.

Why are we demanding more than expiring contracts?  We didn’t give up anything to get him last summer.  Are we really trying to make a profit on this mistake?

Fuck all that, the old man groans! Keep Josh Smith. Giving him up for nothing sets you back even more years and he is still an amazing athletic talent. He just happens to be an “idiot” like Barkley said and a supreme primaddona as I told you and Bill Simmons confirmed in his column today. But you reign him in. You get a legit #2 on this team. You pare down Smith’s minutes per his performance, and add another shooter as well off the bench and see WTF happens. We’ve played this whole goddamn season with no shooters. Everyone tasked with this has failed miserably except for some occasional games by Singler. (KCP, JJ, Dattome have been failures and its crushed and made Josh Smith actually look worse than he really is.)

You quote Barkley, but missed his point. He was saying Smith will never get it, that there is no reigning him in. Smith is who he is.

Oats, Smith has only been playing this way for 10 seasons now.  Thats hardly enough time to become set in your ways.

Besides, what could we do with an expiring contract and getting Smith’s long term deal off the books?  Sign a player or utilize cap room to trade for a player that fits the team better?  That would take years.

Look, I can’t stand the guy, really. I agree with you. But I also see still amazing, rare, athletic talent that might be harnessed and that I don’t want to give away for zilch. But I’m not going to argue seriously for keeping him either…

Joye, If we just traded away every player that didn’t work out on the team well we wouldn’t get the joy of watching a guy like Charlie V warming the bench for 5 years or trading away draft picks to rid ourselves of bad contract like Ben Gordon.

Could be worse. Could have traded Monroe. With Smith still shooting constantly, the Pistons are more likely to keep their draft pick this year.

Let’s see how that summer league lineup works in the NBA. Siva/KCP/Mitchell/Drummond/Singler. Those are the 5 players I want to see develop, and also the best odds at keeping our pick. #thingsthatwillneverhappen

Joe Dumars I mean “Dumb”ars sucks ass. I have no faith in this guy what so ever. He should have been fired 5 years ago damn it!!! Dumbars is ruining this team and franchise! He butchers every single  draft and can’t make trades worth shit. Dumbars needs to go before he butchers another draft especially bc this draft is going to have a lot of talent. HEY TOM GORES PLEASE FIRE JOE DUMARS BEFORE HE DOES ANY MORE DAMAGE TO MY BELOVED DETROIT PISTONS!!!

That tweet from Lowe actually makes me think that Joe D is still running things (I know, I know…but Gores fired the coach and Joe D is in a contract year and the team is horrible how can he still be the one making decisions?). Go do a Google search on Joe D trade quotes and you’ll see them littered all over the place about “not making a trade just to make a trade” and just plain arrogance regarding his overvaluing of players.

Joe D has made 4 trades involving major talents/names in his time at the helm: Grant Hill to Orlando for Chucky and Ben; Stackhouse et al. to Washington for Rip; the deal to bring Sheed in at the deadline; and Billups, McDyess, and Samb for Iverson. He has only made 5 deals in the month of February in his time leading this team. In all honesty, looking back at his deals, the only one I would have actually expected would have been like a Mitchell, Harrelson, or Siva for a future 2nd round pick 5 years from now that turns out to be a somewhat decent player (eh hem Budinger?) that gets traded for another future 2nd round draft pick.
