Motown welcomes Jazz…

Essentials

  • Teams: Utah Jazz (13-27) at Detroit Pistons (16-22)
  • Date: January 7, 2014
  • Time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Television: FSD

What to look for

The Detroit Pistons must take the Utah Jazz seriously, otherwise they might be in for a rude awakening.

There is a sentiment going around that Detroit should be better given the pieces on the roster. The Pistons have a combination of veterans and inexperienced players, and that should suffice in getting them over .500 considering the talent at their disposal.

And yet, Detroit’s performance so far this season is essentially on par with a Philadelphia 76ers team that is tanking. Thus, there are no easy ones for Mo Cheeks’ unit.

With respect to tonight’s visitors, one could easily get seduced into thinking they are an awful team because the Jazz own the worst record in the Western Conference and opened up the season with an eight-game losing streak.

Mind you, they are only three wins back of the Pistons (yikes!) in terms of overall record. Utah has split their last 10 games and recorded victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets over the course of that stretch.

Utah has accomplished this by getting some solid production out of their young guns. Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors, Gordan Hayward (has been recently sidelined because of a hip injury), Alec Burks and Trey Burke have gotten minutes and done good things with them.

The Jazz might lack experience, but they certainly make up for it at times with their youthful exuberance. They are a squad with emerging talent at key positions (guard and on the interior), which tends to cause issues for their opponents.

Indeed, the Pistons know this better than most given the troubles that they cause against the opposition with the likes of Andre Drummond. There’s an old adage in the NBA that still holds true today: you cannot teach size.

And well, the Jazz have it in Kanter and Favors. Granted, they are not the most consistent pair of big men in the league, but they will have nights where they dominate the glass as well as the paint.

That makes for a fun matchup against the Pistons considering that Detroit essentially follows that recipe. The Favors-versus-Drummond duel is unlikely to produce big headlines, but it should be a good and entertaining battle of young big men with raw talent.

What I would like to see tonight:
    - Keep KCP involved in 2nd halves
    - feed smith in the post (I like his numbers and his evolution from november to january)
    - crisp defensive rotations and solid pick n’ roll D
    - jennings dishing efficiently and taking mostly good shots (and play off the ball some)
    - keep Monroe involved offensively with post ups and plays at the elbows

    Go Pistons!

If we use our big 3 for long stretches tonight which allows say Marvin Williams to look like an allstar then you’ll know nothing has changed. The only timed I’d like to see us go big is if Favors, Kanter or Biendriens are on the floor together.

So the big 3 is a combined 3-14. Slow perimeter rotations has led to 7-16 3pt shooting from Utah with 4 of them coming from the SF position. We suck…that is all!

Plus Kanter puts up 15 off the bench at the half. He’s been bad this year.

Why haven’t we fired Mo Cheeks and Traded either Monroe or Smith? Also fire Dumars, how could I forget about that. This team is almost unwatchable.

Something must be going on. Smith and Monroe hardly played any of the 3rd quarter. I think you might see another Smith/Cheeks showdown. At one point in the 3rd we went with Jennings/Bynum/Stuckey/Singler/Drummond. I mean are you fcking kidding me or what.

Joe Dumars should be fired. He has made this team worse overall. He once again was sure he had better scouting than everyone else in the league for the draft and blew it completely.
He once again wasted a pile of money, drafted wrong and ignored team chemistry.
That was my last game watching this year. The team he created is an embarrassment

Joe Dumars did not like Trey Burke, WHY?
H plays just like Iseah, his former team mate.
Forget about like & dislike, have guys like the WORM and the Microwave, and Lambear etc. You remember them?

4 days off of practice and this is the result?

No need to gloat about something that was completely obvious before the draft even happened. At this point, it’s just sad. No pride in being right about moves the Pistons should’ve made anymore.

Seriously though … good for Trey Burke. He deserved this.

1st half Burke looked like a poor man’s (Milwaukee) Brandon Jennings. 2nd half he was awesome. He pretty much sparked his team to the win. Oh and yes it’s sad that he’s not wearing anything but piston red whit and blue .

Cheeks has been terrible and Josh Smith just doesn;t want to listen. I think Cheeks, Smith and Dumars have to go. Brandon Jennings I actually think is a good fit with Dre. Jennings won;t put up with a loser and he’ll give up if we stink. He has to stay to we can insurn that we tank.

You mean to tell me that there is not going to be any administrative decisions made, after this ass kicking at home from a young, struggling Jazz team.
The Pistons have been off since Sunday and loose a home game. There is video of this game. WE did loose to the Jazz, 110-89.
Something has to be done, now!!!

Nice of Monroe and Smith to show up to the game. 2 for 13? 3 rebounds? I half expect everyone to get an F but Monroe and Smith were pitiful. I know we’re a terrible team but a little effort never killed anyone.

On a side not if Monroe is just going to play glorified 6th man than why keep him? Joe D is going to have us paying 14 mill for Monroe to play 6th man and 8 mill for Stuckey to come off the bench. I think its time to move some players so this doesn’t happen. 22 mill for the bench isn’t gunna yield a winning team.

Very disappointing. Little effort from the frontline and the coaching was horrendous. There is something wrong with the leadership or lack thereof of this team. Have they tuned Cheeks out already?

My solution is to fire Cheeks and have Billups and Sheed coach the team. Could it really be any worse?
