Dwight Howard has his best game since leaving the Magic as he overwhelms Detroit

Houston Rockets 114 FinalRecap | Box Score 97 Detroit Pistons
Greg Monroe, PF 26 MIN | 5-10 FG | 0-0 FT | 11 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 10 PTS | -1Monroe played better defense on Dwight Howard than any other Piston. That’s not saying much.
Josh Smith, SF 29 MIN | 8-20 FG | 3-7 FT | 6 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 2 BLK | 3 TO | 19 PTS | -9Smith is looking to score every trip down the court. He’s not very efficient; but until someone else not named Jennings decides to force the issue, the Pistons need this from Smith.
Andre Drummond, C 29 MIN | 4-5 FG | 1-2 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 4 BLK | 0 TO | 9 PTS | -17The things you think you can count on from Drummond are defense and rebounding. Howard moved Drummond around wherever he wanted and Drummond’s rebounding was decent at absolute best. Also, two of Drummond’s blocks were clear goaltends.
Brandon Jennings, PG 32 MIN | 2-11 FG | 4-5 FT | 1 REB | 10 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 8 PTS | -7Jennings plays almost exactly the same every game. Sometimes a decent number of his shots go in, sometimes they don’t. Tonight, he couldn’t hit a thing.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG 20 MIN | 1-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | -16No Piston defended well in this game. That makes it tough to grade out well for a Piston whose entire value is his defense.
Tony Mitchell, PF 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 2-4 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 2 PTS | +2Mitchell’s cameo was meaningless garbage time and his play inspired no reaction, positive or negative.
Josh Harrellson, PF 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -1Harrellson was put in to slow down Dwight. He didn’t, but he wasn’t given a real chance either.
Jonas Jerebko, PF 3 MIN | 0-0 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +2Jerebko’s cameo was meaningless garbage time and his play inspired no reaction, positive or negative.
Charlie Villanueva, PF 5 MIN | 2-5 FG | 2-3 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 6 PTS | -7Charlie came into the game and did what he was supposed to. He shot a lot and hit enough of his shots. But he contributed nothing more.
Luigi Datome, SF 13 MIN | 4-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 9 PTS | -4Gigi looked fantastic in this one. Too bad it was all too little, too late.
Kyle Singler, SF 31 MIN | 5-9 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 12 PTS | -1Singler was the only Piston who could keep up with the Rockets on the break.
Will Bynum, PG 23 MIN | 5-12 FG | 1-1 FT | 4 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 11 PTS | -2Bynum went at the Houston defense. He briefly made it feel like the Pistons had a shot.
Rodney Stuckey, SG 23 MIN | 4-9 FG | 1-2 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 9 PTS | -24Stuckey played hard… on offense. He didn’t even try on D and he wasn’t that effective on O. Unacceptable.
Maurice Cheeks
I don’t know what Cheeks could have done differently in this one. Detroit just got torched by Howard. But he certainly didn’t make a positive impact.

Feb. 20 is the Trade Deadline, we still have a long way to go before something happens. I suspect sometime in February will be when we trade but not this early. Not unless we get presented with a good opportunity. Boston is a good opportunity but they may want to wait until the deadline when teams are little more desperate or another injury pops up.

Drummond is just a kid. He plays horrible defense all year and today he was just abused. People forget how raw he still is, because of his incredible hands and athletic abilities. I hope he wants to learn because he has major gaps in basics.
I love having him and I think he is untradeabble, but just please stop writing about him like he is one of the best center in the game right now. He could be, but he needs a few more years

He has played horrible defense….he actually played good one on one defense against guys like…Al Jefferson, the center from the t-wolves, nene, Hibbert….tonight he just got his Ass handed to him…

      Dwight exploited him….
Jennings has 10ast only 1 turner…he was clearly trying to his teammates involved and he gets a D? only took 11 shots wasn’t forcing it…
Anyway, as long as we do not have a legit wing player, this is only going to get worse

too hard on jennings too easy on bynum. remember the pistons tend to loose their momentum and let opponent gain one when bynum is in the game for the first time

If Dumars makes a move to trade I will be surprised.  he believes he holds all the cards. If he trades him (Monroe) it would be to Phoenix in order to get draft choices. No body wants CV on their roster.

Here is my xmas list for the Pistons.
    1.  Trade Bullwinkle for a bag of chips.
    2.  Someone please pass KCP the ball when he is standing on the wing with his hands out!
    3.  A visit from Jesus Datome.
    4.  For Jennings to stop playing Hero to Zero ball.
    5.  For some glue to stick JS to the low post and abuse his cover.
    6.  A small forward.
    7.  Trade Bynum for a small soda.
    8.  Draft picks.
    9.  For the end of the season and the end of CV and Stuckey contracts.
    10.  a Bullwinkle trade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously? You want to ditch Monroe for nothing? Why? If the Pistons wanted to part ways with him, it would be easy to just let him walk at season’s end. But that would be stupid because he has value.

imho Drummond’s defense has been overrated, in general. This guy can block shots and has tremendous potential as well. But, his defense man to man is awful to mediocre, depending on who is he guarding. He’s late sometimes and other times he simply misses his man during defensive rotations. He struggles mightly against above-average centers with a decent skill-set and his fouls…well…sometimes they are ridiculous….The fact that he would be clogging the lane and avoiding penetrations from the perimeter  with his intimidation  has been…questionable,  at best,  so far.
Another point of last game was the awful coaching. Starting with the early substituion of KCP. We only double-teamed Howard two three times the whole game, can you belive that? He already had 20p 10r not even halfway the second quarter. That made me go crazy. The rotations had no-sense most of the times, and Cheeks seemed to throw the game away before the third quarter was over. How is it possible Harrelson barely had a chance ?

I expected us to lose this game, but it’s disheartening that Drummond got abused so thoroughly by Howard.

He’s 20 give him time. Dwight’s just better right now. In a few years or even next year Dre will start winning these matchups. Gotta be patient, right now Dre’s putting up the same numbers as a 20 year old Dwight. I imagine Drummond will use this to his advantage and learn from it. Our next matchup against this team is March 1st, Drummond’s improving fast by then it shouldn’t be this lopsided.

Will Bynum scores 11 points on 5 for 12 shooting and gets a B+, Stuckey scores 9 on 4 for 9 and gets a D+? I didn’t watch the game, but unless Bynum was straight lock-down on defense I don’t think 3 rebounds and 1 assist justify that big of a discrepancy.

      1) Stuckey is the better player and has a harder grading curve.
      2) Did you look at Bynum’s -2 to Stuckey’s -24?

^This: showing the young pup his place, just like Shaq used to do on occasion, even in his dotage.
Jennings’ grade also was too harsh. The poor defense and poor shooting certainly drives him into negative territory, but a 10:1 AST:TO ratio is stellar. I’m thinking C+ was about right.

The difference in the shot charts is amazing.  Look at Houston’s threes and paint shots, and our mid-range misses.  Tells the whole story……
