Pistons want to trade Brandon Knight for Rajon Rondo; Celtics obviously prefer Andre Drummond

Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe (hat tip: Matt Moore of Eye on Basketball):

The Pistons are quite interested in Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo, but they don’t have a package to offer that would attract president of basketball operations Danny Ainge to making a deal. The Celtics would presumably ask for emerging center Andre Drummond, who is as close to untouchable as a younger player can get. Detroit would like to send the Celtics Brandon Knight and an expiring contract, but that wouldn’t be nearly enough.

The Pistons probably aren’t trading Andre Drummond for Rajon Rondo. The Celtics definitely aren’t trading Rondo for Brandon Knight.

At some point, a compromise deal based on Rondo for Greg Monroe could make sense, but until both sides are willing to discuss that more-sensible swap, they’re not going to make any real progress. I don’t get the sense the Celtics are rushing to trade Rondo without seeing how he works with Brad Stevens first, anyway.

the celts are trying to sucker joe d like several other teams have suckered joe d over the last few years.  joe d is becoming the biotch of a lot of other nba gms, the guy they turn to when they want to  do some nasty stuff that no one else will fall for.
came across this post on a truehoop sister blog for the celtics that is very perceptive, i think.
    http://celticshub.com/2013/07/08/the-one-year-rebuild/
their theory is that ainge is trying to rebuild the celts in one year and that dumping rondo is a crucial and necessary part of that build.
consequently and implicitly, they won’t be looking for dollar for dollar value, but will instead accept something that will allow them to continue to tank this upcoming year.
unless, of course, some idiot like joe d gives them an offer, in his rondo-lust, that they would never have imagined.  an offer that might include a potential all star big man like greg monroe.
the last paragraph is my own take, but the post is well worth reading as pistons’ fans consider the prospect of trading for rondo.
    this is their take:
”If Boston truly intends to lose, you’ll see any return for Rondo include expiring contracts, draft picks and maybe a young asset that doesn’t move next season’s needle in terms of wins and losses. A Rondo trade could also include the departure of Bass or Lee. In any case, expect to be underwhelmed by the return.”
again, just the opinion of one blogger, but it makes lots of sense, considering what danny ainge has done so far.  i just hope joe d is smart enough to resist giving up monroe.
stuckey…knight…a first round choice…sure.  but a player like monroe for a player with rondo’s profile who boston is trying to dump so that they can tank?  you’ve got to be kidding.
oh, but unfortunately, all i have to do is look back to the gordon charlotte trade to see that joe d will do some truly wretched things, if he feels he needs to move or acquire a player.

What about a BKnight/BJennings sign and trade with milwaukee. Throw in Bynum and singler as well

I think I’d rather have Knight than Jennings. Jennings is probably the better PG. But Knight is a better player on a bang-for-buck basis.

Boston has 16 or 17 players under contract right now so I think they will be looking to downsize

I dont see the Cs trading a superstar PG for less than Andre Drummond.

Rondo is established in the pros as a dominant player and Drummond isn’t. Rondo makes a ton of sense for Detroit basketball wise and chemistry wise as well since he’s best friends with Josh Smith. I think the Cs would be willing to do Rondo for Stuckey + Drummond or if the Pistons want Wallace they could do Rondo + Wallace for Stuckey + Charlie V + Drummond.

This deal isn’t happening without Drummond.

That’s fine. Then it just absolutely shouldn’t happen. Drummond is simply way more valuable than Rondo. Let the Celtics keep Rondo and screw up their own tank job.
