Trey Burke was trash in his first summer league game! going for 1/12 for 8 points. I know you can’t judge him from the first game but I kinda of starting to thank Dumars for not picking him.

i think its a little early to decide whether or not dumars made the right pick. in fact, we probably won’t even know at the end of their rookie season unless one of them surprises either by being really good or really bad

Not gonna bash Burke or praise Pope..

But Pope is a streaky shooter anyway… Difference that Pope offers if when his shot isn’t falling he can hopefully impact the game on defense. Today pope shot wasn’t falling, but I don’t remember anyone talking about his defense, even when he was beat on that one play his recovery time was Lebron like …

Burke shooting the ball was terrible, didn’t really impact the game at all…on either side of the ball..he had a few rebounds late when the game was decided…

I don’t think Summer league is a final evaluation…but you can see what guys are capable of…

Summer league is practically meaningless. Austin Daye stars while Andre Drummond gets badly outplayed by mid 2nd round pick Kyle O’Quinn. It’s more the start of introducing guys to their pro system than anything else.

There’s a reason for the practically qualifier. It’s not completely meaningless, but there is no meaningful correlation between summer league success and actual NBA success. It’s little more than a workout session.

How can other players that are not the best at playing defense not be inspired to put there all in at the defensive side when you see a big freaking dude like Drummond dominating another team without having fancy moves or shots going down for him on a regular basis.

KCP needs spacing and a pg to get him the ball. If Knight is the starting PG he may have a rough rookie year. He may have the Rip Hamilton problem of not having a lot of creativity to his offensive game, which doesn’t mean he can’t be effective. In any event, you can’t conclude anything after one game.

Drummond had a monster stats game but didn’t look disciplined on offensive or d, and he looked tired. The same sort of tired we saw in the regular season when he played more than 20 min. Remember when he said he’d now pace himself after entering the starting lineup? He needs to take conditioning more seriously to maximize his potential. You can say that poor conditioning is expected as summer league but nearly all of the other guys looked sharp in this regard.

I didn’t see anything from Siva that suggests he’ll be on the active roster much less in the rotation.

Mitchell played within himself, which is difficult in summer league where there’s an ethos of “I need to get mine or else I’m on the street come November.” The best way to put it – he played with a lot of maturity, which is kinda surprising for a uber-athletic dude who was knocked for having a low motor. I think it’s fair to say he played with a high motor but always in the flow of the game. Mitchell’s performance impressed me the most.

I’m going on record with a prediction that Middleton will take the backup SF job from Singler. He looks VERY confident, consistently demanded the ball and was money from that 15-18 ft area every time he found a little bit of space. Question – why can’t Middleton get quality minutes at the 2?

I just watched the game against only time drummond looked tired was then he dribbled the full length of the court…. Also he played the first 7-8 minutes of each qrt…. Expect in the 4th, when he didn’t wanna come out… Pistons also have to find minutes for Slava …

Defensively, I don’t know if Middleton can defnd the 2 …but he looked very confident, M

I thought Siva looked really good for the 56th pick in the draft, and he probably helped his case for making the team. Due had 6 assists and 1 turnover, and added 4 steals on top of that. On a team as weak at PG as Detroit is, I think Siva looks pretty darn likely to make the team as a defender and facilitator. The kid can’t hit a jump shot, but he’s aware of that limitation and tries not to take them often. He managed to take 8 free throws because of his ability to get to the rim. If he has a couple more games like this then he is almost certainly making the roster. He looked like a solid 3rd point guard to me.

cheeks basically expects his guys to play hard on defense and then just claw and scratch and manufacture points anyway they can.
i didn’t see the game yet, but it seems like siva is doing exactly that.
cheeks will love him and might give him a real shot.
cheeks was a ballhawking, bad jump shooting, unusual PG himself.  i think he’s got a soft spot for guys like himself…and maybe siva.

The thing you have to remember is that other guys aren’t carrying around 270-280lbs like Drummond is. He definitely has to work on his conditioning but I think it’s something that he will always probably struggle with due to his sheer size. With the big man rotation that we’ll have this coming season as long as he goes hard for 5-6 mins whilst on court he’ll have another big guy who can’t wait to get back into the game so he can have a rest.

I agree. Why is he attempting turn-around jumpers? That should be added in like year 4. Hit your free throws and have a jump hook over both shoulders and you can register a season of 18 13 and 3.5 blocks. He needs to be a strictly power move sort of guy.

The problem is that he should just stick to power moves. I would use Shaq as the model. Shaq put up 20 and 10 just banging into guys until he got position and then dunking, making a layup, or rebounding his point-blank misses. At 280 Dre can replicate that. I see him trying to do all this stuff with touch and it looks ridiculous. I don’t even think he’s built for touch or anything delicate for that matter. Speaking of which the thought of Rasheed being in charge of his development is enough to make my stomach turn. Love Rasheed, but he was the softest 7 footer in the league on offense. Hated to bang, loved the turn around J and used it almost exclusively. That cannot be Dre’s offensive model.
