Pistons calling about trades for Rajon Rondo, Rudy Gay

Apparently, the Pistons didn’t wait for Rajon Rondo to become publically available to tell the Celtics of their interest. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com:

the Pistons were among the first teams to reach out to the Celtics and express interest in acquiring Rondo, the All-Star point guard who is coming off an ACL injury, league sources told CBSSports.com. Having already made lucrative pitches to free agents Josh Smith and Andre Iguodala, Pistons president Joe Dumars also has registered interest in Raptors forward Rudy Gay, one source said.

You can read more about my thoughts on trading for Rondo and/or Gay at ProBasketballTalk.

I’d give up one of 2 deals to get this done.
    1) Knight and CVs expiring contract
    or
    2) Stuckey and CVs expiring contract.

Whomever isn’t traded can then start at PG for us until Rondo is healthy.

Why would the Cs want CV’s expiring deal? Knight has some value, but not enough for them to give up Rondo. And even if it was, they would insist on Knight for Rondo straight up without a negative asset like CV thrown in.

The most likely way to get Rondo without giving up a whole lot is to also take back Gerald Wallace.

For exactly that… future cap room. If they are going to hit tank mode full on to snag Wiggins then what better way than to have CV chucking up 3s for a season and then letting him expire the season after they get the best odds at Wiggins, Parker, Randle and Smart. No D Charlie is the perfect 1 year rental and I don’t care what Ainge says about not tanking. Its not tanking if you are shit I guess.

But they’d be even better off with a trade exception. It provides approximately the same on court value as CV, they don’t have to pay it any money, and it is more desirable asset to trade to another team down the road.

I don’t think the C’s would ever do that.  I’m not a Rondo fan but if that’s all you have to give to get him I’m fine with.  My guess is the C’s are going to ask for a lot more for Rondo given they know Joe drools all over the floor over him.

The only asset besides cap space that I see the Pistons trading for guys on this level is Monroe and I would hesitate to do it. But if this is true, and Dumars wants to go in the direction of trading him, then I would expect a big deal on the order of this magnitude.

I don’t think Gay has “negative value” to Detroit. I wouldn’t give up any young assets to acquire him, but if you told me Toronto was willing to give us Gay for Villanueva and Stuckey, I’d do it in a heartbeat. He’s overpaid and he’s not a franchise player, but he was much better and actually made some shots after the trade last year, and his shooting numbers started to go back to previous norms for him when he went to Toronto. The guy Toronto put out there the final 2 months of the season is worth trading expiring contracts for. The guy who couldn’t make a shot but didn’t stop taking them in Memphis isn’t.

Why would Toronto give up Gay for Stuckey + CV? Even if they really don’t want him, it would be for just Stuckey, with no CV.

CV has negative value to every other team. To Detroit, he is valueless because he can be amnestied. I just don’t see how people don’t get this.

You have to give someone else an asset to take CV off your hands. or you can get rid of him for nothing. And when you have cap space, salaries in a trade don’t have to match.

Because Gay is massively overpaid and not that great, and perhaps the new GM doesn’t want his salary on the books for the next two years? The salaries don’t have to match up, but it would be worth it for Detroit if they did. Just throwing an idea out there that has some merit depending on the thoughts of the new regime for the Raptors.

But it would make much more sense, if you’re going to trade for Gay, to just trade Stuckey for him and then amnesty CV. Because the Raptors have no reason to want CV.

But I agree that Gay is way overpaid. The problem is that he is actually a pretty good fit. So if there is no market for him, maybe the Pistons could get an asset in exchange for taking him off the Raptors’ hands.

Why is he a good fit? We’re basically putting him in the same situation as Memphis. The only perimeter playmaker with 2 bigs clogging the paint. Didn’t work out well for him there.

If we are going to trade for Gay I’m sure we would amnesty CV so we can eat his contract. Also if we traded for Rondo we would have to amnesty CV so that we could take on someone like Gerald Wallace. Also should probably amnesty him just to make that Gordon trade make sense.

For the Raptors he shot 38%/26% in Feb, 43%/29% in Mar, and 48%/50% in 9 games in Apr. Still not very efficient. He went on a tear in April but that clearly isn’t very likely to hold up.

Being 1 or 2 games away from finals until this junk….. So know I will be brief and too the point. Dumars….step away from the buffett table and study these free agents. With your draft picks, you need to keep only 3 players from current roster, Bknight, Drummond and Monroe. Keep Bknight on short lease (1 more year to develop) and save your money until NEXT year. These free agents will not help us get past the 9th seed in the East.

lol, good luck with that. What players are you going to get to take a 1 yr deal with a lottery team, when they could get more money in longterm deals elsewhere?

Money is the only incentive to getting players here. Offering someone a 1 yr 10 mil deal is not going to get it done if they have a 4 yr 20 mil deal from another team. Not to mention, players don’t like switching teams every year and prefer longterm security.

So sounds cool in theory, but reality is quite different.

            by Huddy

They are required, but failure to do so is a fine like luxury tax so it isn’t the end of the world.  You are right that players would prefer a long term deal, but with the FA market looking so much better next year most teams won’t be offering those.  Players do not dictate the market so while they may prefer a 4 year 20 mil deal to a 1 year 10 mil deal or whatever it may be, they don’t decide what teams are offering and at the end of the day prefer 10 mil and a job over sitting out the season hoping to be picked up by a contender.  There are always players that don’t get offers.

maybe they should spend their money on a couple of midlevel players, let cheeks mess with this bunch for a year, and see what they may need when the dust settles. take a long term approach. even though they have been horrid for a few years, this group may have more possibilities.
trying to make the playoffs as the eighth seed next season looks like short term thinking to me.

Dumars will sign Bynum and Greg Oden.  Then, he’ll take Billups as a mentor PG.
Perhaps Vinny Johnson could also be available.

    Dumars had a solid run 2000 – 2004.

He killed the franchise since the Darko draft and the Pistons fans suffer for 10 years (5 years of bad contracts + 5 years of not getting any FA’s to sign here so the Pistons are so bad).
That’s 10 years of no sunshine.  Dumars is in the dark and the Pistons fan base finds other ways to spend their hard earned money.

Gore has got to be thinking about selling the team already…what a joke of a franchise.

I’d go after Rondo and Granger.  If Granger’s healthy, he provides floor spacing and a go to player.  Rondo IMO is a top 4 point guard when healthy.  If Granger doesn’t work out, we can let him go because of his expiring contract.  A lineup of Rondo, KCP, Granger, Moose/Smith (if we trade Moose, we can sign Smith), Drummond is a playoff team in a weak East.

I’d rather acquire about Jeff Green, Ainge would be more likely to trade him then Rondo, but you never know. I think Green is better then Rudy Gay. If we could get both Rondo and Green from Boston for Knight/Monroe/Stuckey, that would be a great deal. Sign Josh Smith to play the 4, Tony Mitchell backs him up. We get three solid players. Boston gets Knight and Monroe (they esp. would love Moose).

But yeah I agree with most people here that Gay for Charlie V and Rodney Stuckey..would do that with my eyes closed, Gay and Rondo would also only be two year deals, with Rondo sitting out minimum half a season, so more like 1.5 seasons rather then 2 full seasons, then there both free agents again..if it doesn’t work they leave. And we become mediocre again.

Maybe Dumars can get creative and talk about a three team deal, sending Stuckey,Monroe/Gay to Boston. Rondo,Gerald Wallace and Jeff Green to Detroit and CV/Knight to Toronto. Just throwing out ideas, probably wouldn’t happen and is silly..but interesting :D and we sign Smith. Can only hope!!

Rajon Rondo – Will Bynum (or Jarrett Jack)
    KCP – Kim English
    Jeff Green – Khris Middleton/Singler
    Josh Smith – Tony Mitchell/Jonas

Or Lebron wants to come here next year so we should save cap space. They must because every name out there they just shoot down. They think that only the starting lineup has any impact on a game. Its all about the rotation and matchups. Fucking people need to get real.

That sounds like a good deal to me as well. The Basic concept is to recognize that Brando Knight will never ever be Close to a Player Rajon Rondo has been all over his career. This has nothing to do with development and cooaching. Rondo has started off his career on a whole different scale than Knight. If you then ask yourself which ways exist to get such an elite PG there is only the conclusion you have to give something valuable up to get Rondo. And Monroe is something very valuable, but he can be replaced with Smith right away. Whether you have Gay or Green as your SF is of secondary importance, then.

I am convinced (and hope) this is a subterfuge to generate interest.  That is all.  I am betting (hoping) that all of these offers to these major free agents will be turned down.  I am thinking that there will be a major trade on the horizon to eat up some of the cap space and that a mid-range free agent will be signed to a short contract that will allow the Pistons to resign Greg Monroe in the future.

So, I’m taking a wait and see view on all of this news.  I judge it the same way I judged the Phil Jackson news; Meaningless drivel…
