Michael Carter-Williams, C.J. McCollum to work out for Pistons at same time

C.J. McCollum tweeted about finding Game 6 of the NBA Finals on a Detroit radio station, and someone asked him about working out with the Pistons. McCollum replied:

yessir that’s exactly wht I’m here for

Then he tweeted to Michael Carter-Williams:

See you in Motown

So, it sounds like McCollum and Carter-Williams will work out for the Pistons at the same time, though it’s not clear whether they’ll actually compete with each other. Obviously, it would help the Pistons if they do, but prospects are often wary of losing these matchups, so they typically avoid them.

Either way, the workout(s) should help the Pistons learn more about two prospects who are similarly rated and expected to get drafted near Detroit’s No. 8 pick. I hope the Pistons can do better than either of them, but in the event they’re the best prospects on the board at No. 8, Detroit must determine which of the two it prefers. That’s what this workout is all about.

They are working out together in Detroit. Unfortunately I do not recall which Detroit writer/reporter reported that, but I saw this morning that they are indeed workin out together with the Pistons.

I think I’ve heard so far that every player who played in college last year is a possibility. That would place our fate in Sacramento. We will basically take who they don’t want. It seems like we’re going to draft by talent again. Not bad but eventually you want some of these pieces to fit together. I know we’re not at that point in the rebuilding process yet but with 20-30 mill that might hit us like a truck. Disfunction is more apt to happen if we don’t have any kind of identity, leaders, or coach to make us better, though that last one might have been solved. In the end I think we’ll draft a PG to split time with Knight. No one ahead of us has a need for PG so wings will be unavailable. Leaves us with either a C or PG and based on Cheeks I’d say PG.

The more I think about it the more I believe that the pistons should draft Shabazz. He has looked good in workouts and he is a scorer. He brings the fire I think the team needs to compete. MCW is a crapshoot and we already have Knight as a combo guard. They should sign a point guard and then get one early in the second round.

What about getting a chance to draft Shabazz and McCollum or Carter-Williams?

Someone is gong to fall, I guess the question is just who will fall and how far?

I’m excited that both players are working out at the same time.  From the start I was pulling for Carter-Williams, but the more that I learn about CJ McCollum the more I hope that he is the pick.

C.J. is very mature and polished player.  This guy out played Trey Burke at Chris Paul’s PG camp before his injure.  I like Knight and Drummond but they both could have benefited by staying in school and developing there bodies and game.  McCollum, is a NBA ready player, Carter-Williams will need some time to add strength, weight, and develop his shoot.

McCollum can put the ball in the basket which we need on this team, his test is going to be how well dose he do breaking down the defense and finding the correct open person.  I’m ready for the draft and season…

I believe that we will be drafting one of these players and getting another player in the top 15 picks.

We need another pick in the late lottery

Are you excited enough to take up $9mil of cap space (in the form of Shawn Marion’s contract) to get the 13th pick?

        by Jon

yep i’d take that trade in a heartbeat. not only would it get an extra pick, it’d also get a starting sf for a year

If the right player falls to 13 then yes I would be very excited about taking on Marions bad contract. Marions contract is like his jump shot, just ULGY…lol

Good point. I think if Shabazz fell to 13, which he might, or KCP did, then it might be a worthwhile move. The other thing to consider though is what free agents would that cause the Pistons to miss out on. Although it should still allow us to give a pretty good offer sheet to Tyreke which is my (unlikely) hope.

What about Jose Calderon for 2 years?  Knight or Stuckey would become trade bate for our best offer in return, players, picks or both…

Calderon and Shabazz / Stuckey and McCollum / MCW and Knight

            by Jon

i think it would leave plenty for tyreke who is also my hope and if not they could just offer a backloaded deal once stuckey and charlie v are off the books

Dallas wants a 2014 1st round for Marion, and 13th. The Pistons can’t make that deal.

KCP isn’t making it to 13 either. Hes on the T-Wolves and Blazers radar. He maybe on the Thunders too.

            by joe dumars

            Opps nevermind.

“The Mavericks are seeking either a 2014 first round pick or a deal to unload Shawn Marion’s contract to create more cap space.”

            by Tyrone

I’m thinking that multiple picks are all in play for the pistons, it all depends on how the draft plays out…  I’ve got total confidence that everything will play out in our favor…

            by Huddy

Dallas is all about going for broke.  If they want to unload Marion or their pick just for cap purposes the deal is going to have to look bad for Dallas with the understanding they are betting on using the space for top FAs.

I wonder if there’s a third player.  From reports in the past, I have the impression the Pistons bring three players in at a time, one of them being a second round prospect.  Didn’t Vernon Macklin come in to work with a couple lottery prospects?

Props to both players if they man-up and face each other.
I’d like to see Burke join that workout but there’s no way his agent would let him.
The other workout I’d like to see is KCP vs. Shabazz vs. Karasev vs. healthy Jamaal Franklin.
better yet get all 7 in with some other Pistons and run 3-on-3 games. dreams of course…

With Mo Cheeks now our coach, hopefully he can work with a young PG and correct his faults. With MCW it would be his jump shot, with McCullom it would be more of a floor leader. I would think it would be easier for Mo to mold McCullom, who already can get his shot off. But, MCW has great size and instincts for the position. Because McCullom is similar to Knight, I would probably lean towards MCW(with KCP in my mind).

Dont see how cheeks helps his shot.  Cheeks had one of the ugliest shots in BB.  He had decent success with it but his mechanics were horrible.  Not the guy i want teaching anyone to shoot.

Carter looks very mediocre to me. McCollum looks like he could be a great scorer, but he’s not a PG, and too undersized to play SG.

      by Jon

its not a definite that he couldn’t play the point, he’s just never been asked to. he already has two abilities of a pg (handles and shooting) and there’s no reason that he can’t learn to pass the way curry has

        by gmehl

Yeah I agree but after watching McCollum’s scouting report video on DraftExpress something just worries me about him. It’s true that he might be able to play the point (and play it well) but I just get the feeling that he might end up more like Mota Ellis than Steph Curry. If we draft him I hope i’m wrong.

On the funny side McCollum looks like Charles Barkley when he was rookie and had hair. It might just be me but I can see it :-)

If/when these guys are off the board…Porter, McLemore, Oladipo, Burke, Bennett, Noel it is going to come down to a choice between:

You’d think that our pick will between the first 4 guys that I named. If one of the top 6 drop then you instantly go with one of them. I like all piston fans hope someone drops but being realistic think it will come down to KCP, Shabazz and McCollum. Joe should go with who he thinks the most talented prospect is rather then for fit. We need talent just as much as Orlando and Charlotte and as far as i’m concerned the best parts can be kept and the worst ones moved on via trade (Stuckey) or amnesty (CV).

i agree with your final 3 except i’d also consider zeller. if he really can shoot as well as recently advertised, he’ll have the chance to be one of the best stretch 4s in the game with his athleticism. he’s as fast as a lot of guards

Chad Ford reported your 6 as the consensus top… Except with Len instead of Burke. No way Alex is on the board at 8.

I hope Alex isn’t on the board at 8. Hopefully one of Zeller, Bazz, MCW is also gone.
