Viacheslav Kravtsov challenged by directing defense

Keith Langlois of Pistons.com on Viacheslav Kravtsov:

“I felt right from the beginning that even though he speaks English, transferring all of the calls and everything out on the floor – particularly in pick-and-roll coverages where he has to give commands to the guards as to which side it’s coming up on, using our terminology and not just calling out ‘pick, pick, pick.’ It’s transferring that and doing it soon enough that has probably been the biggest challenge,” said Brian Hill, still filling in for Lawrence Frank while he tends to his wife Susan, dealing with a health concern.

This probably is a challenge for Kravtsov, but when I watch him, I don’t sense he always knows where he should be. He must gain a better understanding of that before successfully directing his teammates.

There’s also an adjustment from playing in Europe where teams play almost exclusively zone to the NBA where teams play almost exclusively man defense.

Even college programs that rely heavily on zone (Syracuse, UCONN, Michigan, etc..) still play a substantial amount of man defense.

I like his athleticism.  I think he could be a decent 15 min center in this league from his phyiscal tools.
