Teams to root for tonight:

Cleveland (1.5 games behind)
New Orleans (1 game behind)
Minnesota (0 games behind)
Toronto (1 game ahead)

It's looking like a tight race for those ping pong combinations.

My guess - Stuckey. It'd be nice to trade him, but I'm not sure who'd take him right now. He's a waste of space most nights.

Obviously, that is the case for the coach. And the players should always be playing to win. But from the management perspective, it can be worth sacrificing the present for the future or vice versa.

And from the fan's perspective, sometimes you're rooting for a win and sometimes for a loss.

The difference next year is that the Pistons will have had an opportunity to sign a big time FA, and, to successfully tank, they will need to get a top 8 pick, not just a lottery pick.

But it's true that if Joe decides to not use his cap space and just wait until the following summer, I will probably be singing the same tune next season. But that will be the end of it. Because then Monroe is due for a raise, and the pick would only be top 1 protected. So another year of tanking would produce no dividends.

For what it's worth, I was hoping the Pistons would make the playoffs this year. It wasn't until that became insanely implausible that I started rooting for the Pistons to lose and get the best pick possible.

Personally, I'm hoping the Pistons sign Millsap this offseason, re-sign Calderon at $5-6M/yr, draft Oladipo, hire a new coach, and save significant cap room for in-season dealing. If they also decide they need another wing, ignore Mayo. He's not worth $7+M/yr. Get some role player for under $2M/yr.

I say you play to win the game, but also play young guys more. Whatever happens, happens. I say this year it doesn't matter when we pick because Burke will be there. He's a great point gaurd.

The pro-tank fans say the same thing every year. "Just get 1 more top pick and then we can start winning". They said the same thing last year, and the year before. And I don't doubt that if we get off to a bad start again next year, that they will be looking towards the draft again wanting to tank just 1 more year.

Monroe may not be an UFA, but that wouldn't stop him from demanding a trade if he were really unhappy, like other high lotto pick franchise type players have done recently.

idk, I just think if the Pistons don't do something drastic this offseason to put together a winning team for next year, things are going to get ugly as these players become fed up.

I agree with you on the bashing, never understood it. He has been the one constant good thing on the the team the last 3 years. He started the year a little slow, but has been a beast most of the last month or so.

Imagine if he had another couple of good players around him that could open him up to be even better. Right now most teams are throwing everyone at him and he's still playing this good.

It'll be quite a while before Monroe can leave in free agency. He'll be an RFA. I guess he could take the QO. But even that would leave him a Piston through 2015. I don't think anyone still wants to be tanking then.

In fact, I don't think any Pistons fans want them to be bad even next season. Between another lottery pick (maybe Oladipo) and a ton of cap space, there would be no reason not to vastly improve the roster.

Like I've long said in response to the fans who want to tank forever. If they don't start winning, the guys you've already tanked to get, like Monroe, are going to get fed up with losing and leave in FA like all the other great players around the league do.

Pistons need to start winning if they want to keep these guys longterm. I honestly couldn't blame Monroe if he wanted to leave this mess.
