Well they are in the playoffs as of now so they don't need to get pushed into them they need to hold their spot and they are trailed by Boston and the Bucks so they have quite a good chance of staying in the playoffs(mostly because of the Bucks). Losing Josh Smith via trade means they will get something in return and without knowing what that is it is hard to tell how far they could go in the playoffs. I think the trade is reasonable because the pick in the scenario is lottery protected so essentially if the trade accomplishes its goal and they hold their playoff spot and fill seats then they give up a mid-late first rounder, which certainly can be very valuable but in reality after 10 its really up int he air. If they lose Smith and get a terrible return out of the trade falling into the lottery they keep their pick and have Bynum able to leave in free agency. the Pistons aren't playing for playoffs and losing Bynum frees up more time for BK and showcasing Stuckey to move him with the possiblity of getting a 1st round pick too. Its not a blockbuster (not that any for Bynum would be) but its not a terrible risk for either team.

Wait? Maybe its been a long night but Bynum puts them over to the playoffs? Atlanta is clearly shopping Smoov to any team that has any interest, he will be and should be moved by the trade deadline. Thus, by losing him Atlanta would never make this trade because clearly by moving arguably their best player they have no hope at doing anything in the playoffs.

I'd call Boston a bit more lacking at point guard right now than OKC is. Right now they have Avery Bradley, Jason Terry, and Leandro Barbosa as their options at the position. When Jason Terry is the best passer you have at the point despite you looking like a potential contender in the East, then you might be willing to make a dumb move. By potential contender I mean I could legitimately seeing them beating anyone in the East other than a healthy Miami. If one of Miami's 3 stars goes down then East becomes wide open. If Boston is convinced Sullinger's back will be a lingering problem then it might be possible. I wouldn't do it if I were them, but Boston has more incentive to acquire Bynum than OKC does.

And that's realistic? I think they are really high on PJ3 and I would need some serious convincing that they aren't just slowly developing a somewhat raw young player coming off an injury scare before I bought into that idea. I think it's more likely they give PJ3 at least another season in their system before they are willing to move him.

Although a ton of the Will Bynum to OKC, came from the rumor that happened a few weeks ago ...

It makes sense.... (Of course I submitted Bynum to OKC for PJ3)

It was kind of explained, but I guess I can restate it.
1) It's not a first rounder for a Bynum rental. There is a reason for the 2nd round pick. In this case it's coming from Detroit, and will be a pick somewhere around pick 40. That has value, and means they aren't dropping much more than 20 spots in the draft with this trade.
2) Atlanta is a playoff team that lost Louis Williams. Plugging in Bynum makes sense for them as they can adequately cover those minutes while also not sacrificing cap space.
3) Keep in mind they are staring down a probable loss of Josh Smith, so while they aren't really contenders this could be one of their last chances to make a splash in the playoffs. The East is wide open, and their best chance of bringing Smith back at a reasonable price is to play well despite being short a player.
4) Atlanta has had problems filling seats, and the best way to fill them is make the playoffs. It's also about keeping a historically fickle fan base interested.

I don't know, but those seem like real world logic to me. Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems reasonably likely that Atlanta would try to milk a playoff team for every dollar they can when they are looking at another Joe Johnson type scenario. Letting Smith go means they will struggle to be a playoff team next year, but keeping him means over paying for a guy that locks them into mediocrity. Why not make some money from the playoffs while they can, then prepare to rebuild after Smith leaves? You can tell your fans you were trying to persuade Smith to stay for less, but really you are just making one last cash grab. It might not make the most basketball sense, but it's not even a lottery pick the team is sacrificing. Besides, how many teams make purely basketball decisions anymore? For that matter, when has Atlanta ever made them? It might require a sales job from Dumars unless Atlanta is already thinking this way, but I wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta bit on this.

I should also note that I'd already seen Mr. Carter's post in the comments, and I like his Maynor trade better than mine. It seems more plausible than mine. I like to think that would have been my suggestion since I have a soft spot for Maynor because I saw a lot of his college career, but it seemed unfair to just use his idea. I'm not reading the comments until after I get the assignment finished on the next go round. I should also point out that one of the advancing suggestions is mine but without the draft picks involved. Yeah, I'd do that if I absolutely couldn't squeeze a draft pick out of the deal, but I think I can get it done.

Rats, too late. I had:

Detroit gets: Reddick (rental and perhaps re-sign) from Orlando and P Jones III (young athletic SF buried on bench) from Oklahoma City.
Orlando gets: Maxiell (salary reduction) and Lamb from OKC a young 2 to replace Reddick.
OKC gets: Bynum to upgrade its bench at a position that is weak for Miami in exchange for players they aren't using now.

Man the advancing trades had the same idea i did a couple had anthony morrow and one had johan petro. But I was saving it for the next round with Stuckey for Petro and Morrow. Ugghh one round off, but I realize now that I should of gotten more for Bynum to advance.
