Rodney Stuckey inactivated due to ‘coach’s decision’ against Magic

Essentials

  • Teams: Detroit Pistons (16-27) at Orlando Magic (27-12)
  • Date: January 27, 2013
  • Time: 6 p.m.
  • Television: Fox Sports Detroit Plus

What to look for

Keith Langlois of Pistons.com:

Stuckey’s inactive status is "coach’s decision," I am told. I’m sure LFrank will be asked that first postgame.

Rodney Stuckey has been struggling lately, but this seems like a rather harsh move. Does Lawrence Frank really believe Khris Middleton will be better than Stuckey? Or is there more to this?

Of course there’s more to this.  Stuckey has had multiple run ins with coaches during his time with Detroit.  This is another one.

Both Jonas and Stuckey have been in the media in the last week having a problem with Frank.  Does this tell us anything about the overall locker room mood?

It could be something along those lines, but if it is, where’s your source on this?  Right now you’re just speculating and passing it along as reasoned insight.  If you know something, then share it.

exactly my thinking though- ainge liked stuckey at one point, might want him as temporary replacement for rondo.  stuckey and expiring for Jeff green?  or lee?  not sure about cap #’s or anything, but just a thought.

Stuckey for Green straight up would work cap-wise, but I can’t imagine the Pistons would take on Green’s contract (he just signed a 4-year deal in the offseason) considering how underwhelming he’s played.  Plus, a trade like that would leave the Pistons with only Knight and Bynum to man the point.  Don’t see the upside of that particular trade.

Hope he gets traded, this staff is off their rocker.  Frank has nothing to stand on, he is the only in the league who would only play drummond 20mins a game, takes out JJ completely and allows Stuckey to go to the bench.

That would be…interesting.  Unless they’d do a 3-way trade, I don’t see that happening.  I don’t see the Pistons touching any of the Celtics veterans (too old and too costly) and Boston can’t take Stuckey on without shedding some cap space.  Plus, Stuckey doesn’t exactly make sense.  Sure, he’d provide a slashing element to an offense that suddenly has very few players capable of getting into the paint off of the dribble but he isn’t a top flight distributor, hasn’t been all that consistent and doesn’t add much as a shooter.

Boston would like both Stuckey and JJ.  I think more Stuckey, but if they want to have any chance of making the playoffs they need some players.  I was watching the game today, and kept saying how are they still in this game.  I am surprised the C’s even have that good of a record, but I guess Rondo does a ton for them.

Boston is at the point where they need to start blowing the team up while they can get a good return on their older vets.  Without Rondo they’re going nowhere this season.  Maybe they can make the playoffs but then what?  They were very dark horses to contend for the east when this season started (read: wasn’t going to happen) and with Rondo’s injury, those chances just disappeared.

Detroit has a chance at making the playoffs this year, but Boston is one of a couple teams in the way. Why improve their odds, and why would they improve the Pistons’ odds? If it wasn’t for that, this would make a lot more sense.

“Given a freedom Knight has not…”

Not sure I understand.  Knight’s been given a lot of freedom this season.  Moreso than most of the rookies and bench players.  He hasn’t produced consistently.

When I say Freedom its being allowed to be aggressive on and off the ball…

Frank is very conservative…Knight was playing amazing in the first half…2nd half the first 5-7 possession they are trying to post up Prince… taking the ball out of his hand….

On or Off the ball…. Knight can find away to score…and he is the only player on our roster that can do that…

All of the players I named are the first option on offense for 4 qrts…

this is exactly how knight could play next to a guard like trey burke.
he could sit off the ball, spot up or be aggressive with his midrange shot opportunities.
if this game doesn’t convince joe d to get a guard like trey burke, nothing will.
nothing against bynum, but his decision making leaves lots to be desired.
if bynum made better decisions and if he was a better 3 point shooter, i’d be fine with him as the permanent starter at PG.
but he isn’t any of those things and that is why a guy like burke could come in and take the starting spot from him.

Lorenzo we have the right to complain when the coach puts in CV rather than Drummond who is our best rebounder on that last play. No we are not a championship team but when our team is blowing double digit leads like we have all season then we have every right to complain. Anyone with any basketball knowledge would of had Drummond in on that last play. To tell you the truth i am down right angry about it to tell you the truth.

Drummond is decent at his free throws (for a big man) so far. Shaq, Ben Wallace and Dwight Howard were/are around the same area or worse at free throws than Drummond but their defense and rebounding made up for it all. Drummond should be viewed the same.

EXACTLY! And doesn’t Frank preach “Defense.” I get that we may need an offensive punch at times but look at Chicago, Coach Thib runs with a defensive lineup with the exception of Boozer. Good defense leads to easy/good offense therefore there wouldn’t be a need for sharp shooters like Daye and CV. Chicago doesn’t have the best offensive team but their defense is what allows them to stay in games. Chicago is stiill a playoff team despite not having their star player. Why? because they play DEFENSE!!!

With Rondo (BOS) and Lou Williams (PHL) gone for the season i think Dumars and Frank have to make a decision of whether we are going to try and make a push for the 8th spot. @Desolation Row – I’d rather have Drummond in the game and sent to the free throw line than let the Magic have 3 offensive rebounds/tip shots at the basket at the end of that game. All it would of taken was 1 of those shots to go in and a foul for the 3pt play and we’d have lost that game. What kind of message is it sending to Drummond when you sit him on the bench because of his free throw shooting. It will only deflate his confidence…if we are going to do that we might as well try and trade the kid which i think would be insane. We need him to be on the court in those late game situations.

Wait, that’s not what happened… Brown was gone for over a year and Ben played under Flip Saunders before bailing — not because of a falling-out but because Chicago offered him like $4 Million per year more than Detroit. I don’t remember how keeping him out of games due to foul trouble issues led to any bitter feelings.

Regardless, I agree Andre Drummond should be playing way more minutes than he is currently. I’m just not convinced he needed to play in that specific situation given his lackluster free throw shooting ability given we have some above-CV rebounders. My point is the choice wasn’t between CV and Drummond; I’m saying there were other options. As for what message that sends Drummond? He needs to shoot free throws better. Then again, my call would be to play the guy 30-35 mins/game and maybe sit him when free throw shooting becomes a priority. I don’t fault Frank for not playing Drummond, I fault him for not having a better rebounder in.

Sorry i meant to write Flip not Larry Brown. I was in a rush when i was typing that. Yes Big Ben left for money reasons but i do recall he wasn’t happy about being pulled at the end of games. He was mainly angry about not being part of the offence but being pulled because other teams used the hack-a-Ben strategy magnified the situation. I read a couple of articles that Ben didn’t resign with us because of Flip. I think he felt as if Flip thought he was an idiot and only good for rebounding/defence. You could see Ben wasn’t a happy player his last season for us.

Tay looks like that half the time…. Just HORRIBLE body language on the court and we get the “He’s been assured that he not going to be traded in the press )  Just unacceptable .. it like the Pistons management is hell bent on proving their insanity right no mater how ridicules it. It seems they don’t care, their attitude is so patronizing to there fans. Like we don’t see that this does not add up.   And 16 min for Dru. just NUTS.

There is no way that Stuckey ever gets moved as long as Dumars is GM. He is no longer a good fit on this team. Boston would be a good destination for him; I think Doc Rivers can get, more out of him than Frank. I would not however be willing to get another tweener like Green who is passive like Prince.

It is not one game or one play or even if we win or not on a game by game bases. We should be building a team. It has been the whole roster / rotation thing for some time. I’m not sure that there are more than a few teams (if any) that would be starting T Prince and Max. Princes energy is so low and Max so undersized. neither have much more than they have shown. in fact mostly there best days are behind them and they are the main stay of the Pistons.  The boards get these gushy praising posts about JD and LF and i wonder what world they are living in. Many National and the away game commentators ALL get it, But the level of denial of management (gun shy from to many bad moves), Detroit Sports Writers and some fans is unbelievable.  These guys can’t find more than 16 min for what what most writers think now would go #2 in the draft?

      Knight doesnt fit this offense…

Our Offense Goes Fast, to Slow, to Slower, to Moderate to Slow ….

Knight needs to be in a offense where he has to stay in attack mode….

They want him to run the Point…but then you dont put the players around him to be successful…

So then you want to make him an @ guard which is fine, but he still should be just a spot up 2…

Decent trade for us but Memphis will not accept it IMO and Josh Smith is more affective at PF than SF so he may not fit that well with us.

I think for all the Bk apologists, the only way we can justify him in the starting lineup is to take Singler’s place as a 2-guard.

Also, it is time to figure out a way play both Drummond and Monroe, this team is a mess anyways, may as well experiment.  Drummond is a very rare talent and for us to not develop him is ridiculous.  Hell if we had to trade the entire roster to rebuild around him, I would say it is worth it.  I guy like Kevin Love would look great next to Drummond.  Basically any pf with a jumper would.

It is funny, draft analysts were saying that Drummond is just good enough to get someone fired.  Seeing how JD is bungling things roster wise, I think it is time for him to leave.  The fact that JoeD can justify keeping guys like Maxiell around (he will pick up his player option) and Prince (as posters who saw Orlando feed said, Orlando media mocked his play) shows that he has poor judgement.

I think the best way, if they’re going to try to build around both, is to have a guard who’s good at both passing and shooting (Trey Burke?) and guys at the 2 and 3 who are good shooters and defenders (English and Singler?). That would make for a dynamic and balanced offense, with all the spacing and firepower you could want, combined with good D and terrific rebounding.

      Burke/Knight
      English/Knight
Tay/Singer (or Singler/Middleton if Tay is traded)
      Monroe/CV
      Drummond/Slava

Alternately, Bynum could just be the PG, but Burke will be better probably.

This way you have 3 shooters when both Greg and Drummond are on the floor and can also play some high-low between them, and for a change of pace you leave just one of them in and then you have 4 shooters and even more space (though less rebounding and D). Sounds like a very effective plan to me and the thing is we are just a pick away. And there are assets we can use to get to Burke if he rises (Bynum, Max, JJ, Stuckey, Daye, Tay, all have some value for one reason or another).

Also, if we can get Sullinger back in a deal involving Stuckey, maybe we can then trade Moose for a really good perimeter player or a nice player and a lottery pick. Moose is very good and their pairing could definitely work but if there’s another good option it’s worth thinking about.

Also, I feel in some way Frank needs a pass, I mean, he can only do so much with crappy pieces.  Compared to the last few losers we had as coach, he has the guys playing with a pulse most nights.

I don’t mean to take pleasure in anyone’s injury/misfortune but click on this link and have a read of the comments. It makes you feel good where we are in our re-building phase. These Celtic fans are all in denial. They need to start re-building asap but the people commenting seem to think that they should stay the course and not trade anyone. I feel that keeping Pierce and KG there now could set them back 4-5 years which is what we did with our vets.

Oh wow hahaha they’re past denial and are just delusional! They won’t have enough to sign most of the people they’re hoping for. I’d say the Pistons probably have better odds to land a star acquisition this summer than the Celtics, we’re one star (heck just one solid contributor) away from competing in the playoffs.

I say where Monroe moving to PF and Drummond starting a C away from making the playoffs. Did you read David Mayo’s mlive article about the reason why Drummond isn’t starting yet? Talk about towing the company line. I threw up in my mouth a little while reading that bull shit excuse. Her it is if your interested:
