Keith Langlois: Pistons more likely to use cap room for trades than free agents

Keith Langlois of Pistons.com:

As I’ve maintained all along, my hunch is that whatever cap space the Pistons clear – and it could be anywhere from $17 million to $25 million, based on what we know now – will be more likely used to facilitate trades than to be spent on free agents.

Langlois speaks with Joe Dumars on the record more than anyone else covering the Pistons, so it’s very possible he has solid information here. It’s also possible Langlois’ hunch is based more on his personal beliefs. I don’t know which is the case here, but it’s definitely worth being aware of what he said.

That’s terrible news. To get a good player at a fair price in trade, you have to give up assets. To get one in FA is free except for the contract.

That’s good news because money buys talent, and in free agency talent is overvalued, but in a trade you can use money to sweeten a deal for someone that has more talent than you – surplus talent.

If the Grizzlies crash a burn then we should go after Rudy Gay

Even though i like the way he plays i think Eric Gordon is way to injury prone to consider. Also if i have to see another piston uniform with that name on the back of it then i might just throw up in my mouth.

Jonny Flynn is playing here in the Australian league (NBL) where he is playing ok but he is by no means dominating. There are better prospects than him running around here. As piston fans we just have to realize that this season isn’t about winning and making the playoffs but rather getting minutes into the young guys and seeing who we keep next season.

This only makes sense.  Cap space for attracting free agents is not nearly as valuable for a non-destination team (i.e. Lakers, Heat, Knicks, etc.).  The Pistons are likely to be a bad team, playing in a cold weather climate in a depressed city.  It makes much more sense to use that cap space to facilitate trades and pick up assets.
The real question is whether those assets will have more value than the first round pick they gave to Charlotte to acquire that cap space.

if we go after Josh Smith, he has to guarantee to sign an extension

I’d love to get Eric Bledsoe from the Clippers for Tayshaun or CV or Max and however much cash they want. They are going to need some extra help to beat Minnesota San Antonio and NYK

Forward help, that is. They already have the best pg in the league

signing free agents rarely works out.  using te space to facillitate trades  works a lot better.  hopefully joe d has learned that lesson.

It’s not an either or proposition.  You have flexibility to use it in trades OR sign free agents OR do both.  That is all you can do anyway.  We seem to have drafted well so if we get the right piece in the off season we can actually challenge for the playoffs and not just talk about it.

Eric Bledsoe would be worth giving up something significant to get. If he’s a free agent this summer (even restricted) they should try hard to get him.
