West coast swing: first stop Phoenix

Essentials

  • Date: November 2, 2012
  • Time: 10:00 p.m.

What to look for

The Detroit Pistons will take on the Phoenix Suns tonight as both teams are coming off a home loss. Part of the reason the Suns fell at the hands of the Golden State Warriors earlier this week was simple: turnovers.

Indeed, Alvin Gentry has a very limited amount of players capable of creating opportunities for themselves or teammates off the dribble and that manifested itself against the Dubs this past Wednesday as the Suns turned the ball over 18 times. This bears paying attention to because Golden State didn’t necessarily force the miscues, but instead profited from them.

Goran Dragic, Michael Beasley, Markieff Morris and to some extent Sebastian Telfair are the only players that can make good decisions with the ball when taking it to the basket. They can pull up for the jumper, go to the rim or feed an open teammate. The rest of the roster struggles when presented with all of these options and consequently may end up coughing up the ball. Naturally, the Pistons should try hugging Suns shooters and thus dare them to put the ball on the floor to make plays.

For all of their weaknesses on the perimeter, the Suns have a solid interior tandem in Luis Scola and Marcin Gortat. Both are quite good in either pick-and-rolls or pick-and-pops and thus need to be accounted for at all times. Gortat is a good finisher at the rim and possesses a good right hook that he favors on deep catches in the paint.

Scola on the other hand is a threat from the perimeter with his jumper and is just as good in the low post. The Argentine favors the right block where he likes to fake towards the middle of the court and then turn to his left for the right hook shot.

Gentry likes to surround his post players with shooters and they do a good job of spacing the floor, routinely setting up shop at the 3-point line in the corners as they anticipate long rotations from their opponents in their pick-and-roll coverage.

On the other side of the ball, the Suns can be had on the interior because they lack the necessary perimeter players to keep opponents out of the paint. Where things get tricky mind you is when Gortat gets into the mix. Given his size, he is naturally inclined to remain below the free throw line in the pick-and-roll to concede the jump shot.

Consequently, ballhandlers can get opportunities to put up shots in these situations, but should they try to challenge the big man, it can be a losing proposition because he is quite adept at contesting shots. Even opposing big men can struggle to score against him because of his size and length. Mind you, his value as a defensive anchor is often tested because he will try to go after shots and thus can be coaxed into fouling.

In addition, because the Suns are poor perimeter defenders, they tend to lose or forget their rebounding responsibilities after opening up the lane, which allows big men to hit the offensive glass for second chance opportunities.

After so many years of having Steve Nash direct traffic for them, the Suns appeared to lack an identity against the Golden State Warriors as players tried to make plays that they did not necessarily have in their repertoires. The Pistons on the other hand have a little bit more continuity going for them and may in fact capitalize on this aspect in the contest tonight.

The Suns had issues with their execution in the fourth quarter against Golden State on both sides of the ball and Detroit may very well be able to take advantage of these issues as players tense up down the stretch of games.

The problem we have right now is that the only guy putting the ball in the hoop (Maxiell) is the guy that everyone wants yanked. Monroe i realized in the last 2 pre season games and against Houston and in the 1st quarter is in a bit of a mini slump. Hopefully he starts to pick things up.

Yeah an 11 point lead halfway through the 2nd quarter became an 8 point deficit by half time. Unfortunately we don’t have that superstar type play to take over when we are struggling to score. I guess Stuckey is supposed to be that guy but he couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean at the moment :-(

Once again our starters get beat up – our guards can’t hit shots and our interior defense is a joke (Monroe is just as terrible defensively as Max). Once again our bench tries to scrap us back in the game only for Frank to pull them and lose whatever points they had made up.

How long does it take Frank to realize these lineups aren’t working? They didn’t work last year either. Our point differential was worse than our record, and our AMAZING sub .500 record afterwards came in the softest part of our schedule. Wake up, coach, this team can be better if you stop sticking to losing lineups.

Drummond and the second unit actually look good out there and are doing all of those things, so why keep them on the bench, play them Frank, play them, please. You are killing this team with these whacky rotations and bullshit minute allocations.

I said after the first game that Drummond and English should start over Stuckey-Maxiell. The starters are a decent collection of talent but a terrible fit as individual pieces. Knight doesn’t play like a PG when Stuckey is next to him, and Stuckey is only effective when he has the green light to shoot whenever he wants. There’s no floor spacing whatsoever to free up Monroe. English is an actual threat to shoot, and plays better off the ball for Knight to get involved setting up plays. Drummond should be obvious with how ridiculously porous our interior D is. As well, he can actually finish a lob or cut to the basket, something that would open up the offense for Knight and Monroe’s passing.

No offense but the Pistons need a new small forward and SG if they want to be contenders. Stuckey is a good 6th man at best. He can’t shoot consistently and is only good at slashing the lane. I’m banking on the Pistons getting Shabazz next draft but then again the Pistons would do something dumb and try to win games against tanking teams at the end only to get a worse pick (granted we got lucky these last few years people were dumb enough not to draft right). The only real players that I can see being a part of the future for the Pistons in the starting lineup are Knight, Monroe, and Drummond. Maybe Singler, English, and Jerebko on the bench but seriously they need a real SG who can spot up shoot and a small forward

anybody watching the game could see that when Drummond was in we kept the ball more and longer. Why does Frank refuse to play good rotations. I watched Kyle Singler lose 3 straight rebounds.

Oh if James Harden’s such a superstar then why is Shannon Brown doing the same thing?

    Because our rotations are dumb.

    Knight / Stuckey / Jerebko / Monroe / Drummond
     Would have won the game.
Why does Frank take players out when they are so obviously productive? Jerebko was killing it, then they take him out. Why is Jerebko playing with Singler? two small forwards. Why is Jerebko Singler and Prince playing together. 3 small forwards on the floor at once.

Eastern conference basketball is just dumb period, I’m about to turn into a Houston fan this is frustrating.

We spend all summer trying to get talent, we get it… just to figure out that we need a new coach?

sure, a better play, and a better mix of players would have been nice.
the shot itself still was a bad shot, imho.  i think there was enough time to do more than what he did with the ball.  a drive and kick to another player would always be a better shot, for example.
also, knight simply makes a lot of head-scratching plays that make you wonder about his BB IQ.  just my opinion, but i am always surprised that he doesn’t play smarter.  if he played smarter, the transition to playing the point would not be as tough as it has been.
if he was simply regarded as a player of average intelligence, it would be one thing.
but almost every story on him always touts his intelligence.  i’m still waiting to actually see proof of it on the court.

Just go for a good draft pick for the next two years and develop. That’s all I want from the Pistons now. We have no possibility of signing a quality player this offseason with the cap space we have if you actually think about it. Who would want to come play in Detroit with the team we have? Doubt Josh smith etc would even consider it. We need to actually go into a FULL rebuilding phase and not the half*** phase that Dumars etc are doing.

Maybe we were all expecting Stuckey to not suck so badly? Or maybe we were all expecting the coaching staff make some smarter decisions with rotations since they had the whole summer league and offseason to think about it? I usually never bash the coaching staff since I realize what a difficult job they have to do but some of this stuff is really just “laughable.” They need to keep Monroe more on the block closer to the basket rather than taking jumpers. They need to find a more quality shooting guard who can actually consistently shoot the dang ball rather than drive into traffic every time and hope for contact to make up for his inadequacy when it comes to shooting the rock. I’m a die hard Piston fan. I have missed probably 10ish games over the last 3-4 seasons due to exams etc. But this is kind of getting pretty bad

I’m not saying to tank the season. What I’m saying is at the end of the season when it appears that we have no chance to make the playoffs rather than trying extremely hard to win every game we should do what other teams do to get a higher lottery pick. I know that it sounds bad but the system is flawed and rather than punish the teams that tank on purpose, the system rewards them generally. But what I’m saying is that either Stuckey needs to find consistently with a jumper or find another role other than SG since a SG should be able to at least have one of those.

I agree Stuckey sucked today. All I am saying is 2 games have been played by a team whose realistic expectations are flirting with an 8 seed. With a team as young as ours we can’t be surprised they play dumb for stretches. I agree drummond should play with Monroe but remember Knight came off the bench last year until he made Frank start him…Dollars to donuts the same happens this year.

If they were coaching to win that should be the rotation. Paint penetration on the floor at all times. Shooting on the floor at all times. Smarts on the floor at all times. Size on the floor at all times.

We are still getting feasted on by every power forward and center we play against. The only time it stopped was when Drummond was in. All of 18 minutes. That’s the game.

Hopefully the coaching staff will get there heads out of their asses sooner rather than later. Don’t give up hope yet, the seasons just starting!

Also, Knight putting up double digit assists only two games into the season is pretty encouraging. Seems like he really did take his off season seriously.

    2. Drummond …I can live with him make Shannon Brown and Telfir being forced to make reverse lay-up. I also learned that I HATE YOU FRANK!!! YOUR ROTATION SUCKS!!! I could careless if Maxiell scores 20 1st quater points because he didn’t create that offense on his own, move Greg to PF and his production is the same …. I saw drummond @ C with Jerebko and Maxiell PF… But refused to put Monroe at PF …sighs of a stubborn coach….

Franks won’t be fired until we start 0-10 …a part of me is hoping for 0-10

Ok, L Frank is a dumb A$$ for not recognizing Monroe and Drummond needs to play together. Stuckey needs his A$$ kicked, I’m through with sticking up for him. Whats the use of all these guys practicing during the summer and playing like they never been on the court with one another before. These guys need to learn how to have fun when they play, it’s to much thinking. Singler should be the shooting guard and English come off the bench, trade Stuckey and play Slava and Drummond at center, there big and they create space. Monroe plays too small for a center. Last year he surprised alot of people, this year teams are ready for him. Also Monroe’s jumper stinks like Stucky, the team needs a shooting coach they shoot with no confidence.
    Great Birthday Present Woopi
