Pistons try to avoid second loss to Orlando in less than a week
Essentials
- Teams: Detroit Pistons (2-9) at Orlando Magic (3-7)
- Date: November 21, 2012
- Time: 7 p.m.
- Television: FSD
What to look for
Like any struggling team, the Orlando Magic have plenty of weaknesses. But the most glaring, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, has been the offense:
The Magic aren’t playing to at least one of their strengths: long-distance shooting.
Redick, Arron Afflalo, Jameer Nelson and E’Twaun Moore are good 3-point shooters, but through Monday, the Magic ranked 29th among the NBA’s 30 teams in treys attempted, trying just 13.5 per game.
Yet, at the same time, Orlando also is failing to draw shooting fouls. The Magic ranked last in free-throws attempted, taking only 16.9 per game.
Asked after Monday’s 81-72 loss in Atlanta what is stalling his team’s offense, coach Jacque Vaughnnoted that the night’s 19 turnovers hindered everything else.
The Magic ranked 22nd in the league in turnovers made, with 15.6 per game.
Of course, it’s a pretty tough sell to anyone who watched the first game between these two teams last week that the Magic are struggling on offense. Orlando shot 49 percent in that game. The Magic made 41 percent of their 3-pointers. The team scored 110 points, 22 above their season average. Orlando also scored 39 points in the fourth quarter alone.
It’s amazing what leaving shooters, even struggling shooters, open all night will do for their confidence. The Pistons responded to that embarrassing home loss to Orlando with a fantastic defensive effort in a blowout win over Boston on Sunday. If the Pistons do a better job of closing out on shooters and keeping Orlando’s limited but active big men off the offensive glass (the Magic had 14 offensive rebounds, several of which led to open jumpers, in the first game), they’ll have a chance at putting together that modest yet elusive first two-game winning streak of the season.

I know this has to be impossible in such a short amount of time but does Andre look a little bulkier in the arms or is it just me?

Three timeouts (well more like two) used in this quarter resulted in four points. You know what? I am not sure if this is all on Frank anymore. This whole team looks like trying to get a square peg in a round hole.

Or it could just be that they are starting to tune Frank out. Either way something needs to change. You don’t want the stench of all THIS kind of losing infecting our young guys. You can handle losing when there is effort but not THIS kind of losing.

I am looking at the play-by-play of the 3rd quarter and i am not going to lie…it’s embarrassing. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Frank get fired or a player traded after this debacle of an effort.

Yeah seriously. If by any chance a Lakers fan is reading this, THIS is a team/scheme that is “not working.”

7 turnovers in that pathetic 3rd quarter effort. We almost had more turnovers than points (8 points).

I think we should rephrase this to:
“Listen How… Please listen to these fans… they care and they know better… You and Frank are not the leaders that we need… GTFO.”

got excited about beating a tired and drained boston team, but turn around and cant beat less talented magic team…. this is why i said we have not turned the corner as a team… horrible

Less talented? I’m not so sure about that anymore. Pistons have Greg Monroe… that’s about it for now. At least Orlando has Nelson, Afflalo, Big Baby, and even J.J. Reddick.

Halfway through the 4th… The second half so far? 38-10… What is this? The “run” for the Magic is still going. I’m done.

These lineups are silly.
The first lineup has no paint defense. Rookies like Richardson and Sullinger go to work with ease on it.
Then he goes with the 2nd lineup, Drummond defends the paint, but the offense can’t do anything, so its a waste.
Common sense would say add Drummond to the first lineup to protect the paint when needed. But I guess thats not the process…

Seriously if Drummond can’t get on the court in a blowout like this then when will he. The situation with playing the kid only 12 minutes a game is screaming Darko all over again.

Well get know him he’s a beast. But does it really matter even if we do manage to land him we’ll just glue him to the bench in favor of a veteran. I’ve been a Dumars supporter/apologist for a while now but this is getting ridiculous. This is the last season I’ll give Dumars before I scream for his head. If there is any hope Gores will have sent him packing long before then.

I wouldn’t blame him today. The Pistons performance was pathetic. The decisions by the coaching staff was atrocious and the players did not come to play the second half.

It’s not the players, these same players played well against Boston. Yeah Boston was tired but think about it. Last year Daye was effected by Franks coaching CV can even make a lay up now, Stuckey is having his worse season of his career. Knight played better through a short season with less training through Franks system. Now Drummond is smiling less and having a less impact in the game. Frank’s coaching is killing them softly.
