i actually think ross will be a decent player. a good, solid guy who will definitely be a regular rotation player for the next decade.
however, drummond has the potential to be much, much more.
and i have a feeling that toronto management and fans will be discussing ross and drummond the same way that detroit fans discuss darko and wade, et al…

Like Minnesota did. They wanted Love, but Mayo was the clear 3rd pick. So they got Mike Miller thrown in who they then packaged with Foye to get Rubio (because Flynn, Lawson, and Calathes just weren’t enough PGs for one team from one draft).

Thus vastly diminishing the number of internet comments that said “KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN!!!!” Although, not until Love and Rubio were able to strut their stuff last season.

Or, if you want Ross, make a friggin’ trade with someone around the 12th to 20th pick. Someone will be willing to part with at least a minor asset to move up.

How was Davis unproven? He was coming off a MOP and NPOY season. This wasn’t for an NBA tournament. It was the Olympics. In that context, Monroe, Cousins, and Davis are equally unproven. All are “proven” on the college level. So Monroe and Cousins have a slightly larger body of work. But if that were the criterion, we should have had Camby at the Olympics.

It’s not necessarily a dis. I’m sure Colangelo is not the only guy who came to that conclusion, or Drummond wouldn’t have fell. But honestly, I think that’s one of the shittiest things that people do to draft prospects in any sport. It’s one thing if Drummond had off-court incidents or a proven track record of being uncoachable. So far, the worst I’ve heard or seen written about him is just that he’s a little lazy. So to me, questioning a 19-year-old’s ‘mental makeup’ because that person is lazy seems unnecessary.

And part of what I find funny about the quote is just that Ross was a terrible pick for that spot based on where most mocks had him going. So fine, pass on Drummond, but don’t reach 10 picks too high for a dude in front of him.

I don’t read this as a dis at all. He’s just, to me, explaining that a lot of considerations go into draft picks. There are questions about whether Drummond has that “killer instinct” (despite his promising start, the team seems to get killed by offensive rebounds when he’s on the floor). Ultimately, he felt a little less confident that Drummond would rise above than Joe did.

Ross isn’t looking so hot right now. He’s a good athlete and decent shooter though.
