I'm a Boston fan living in Australia. Boston drafted Montross. The only background i had on him was an SI article from when Montross, Lynch, King and maybe Hubert Davis were the UNB recruiting class (A year before the Fab 5 of Michigan i think). I also had the UNC v Michigan championship game. I watched it repeatedly and came away with some thoughts on how Montross's NBA carear would go ...
1. He was nice and big. Thick through the chest, thick down low to hold position, he looked like he had an NBA body.
2. He wasnt robotic in his moves, but he was deliberate.
3. He had those little lefty and righty hook shots. Worked the offensive glass. I thought he could get to 10.0PPG with those kind of tools.
4. While not a leaper, he seemed to have long-ish arms (these were the days before "reach" became must-have). I could see him going for 8.0 RPG.
5. He played good positional defence. You had to beat him, he wasnt skying into the air at your pump fakes.

In short, i was sold on Montross in Boston. He was an upgrade on Joe Kline and even if he wasnt going to dominate, i could see Montross holding opposition centers in check. He had good rookie stats, then played Shaq as well as you could hope in the first round of the playoffs, which was the last year of the old Boston Garden.

I dont know why he went downhill from there.

I saw his best game as a Piston. He had 22 I think in a game against New Jersey in 2001. They smoked the Nets that night!
