The title is misleading…
His actual quote from the linked article is ” We’ve got a young, deep team, and we’re going to make the playoffs”

Sorry to nitpick, but the headline doesn’t make sense. He’s either predicting the playoffs or it’s not a prediction. Though I seem to remember him officially GuaranSwedeing a playoff berth. Sounds like he’s backed off his stance some since then. Maybe he just looked around at the East and recognized around 9 superior teams.

As for MY prediction, next season looks a lot like the last three, only younger. For most of the season it’ll look like they’re in some sort of playoff race. The optimists will think they’re a lot closer than they really are. Desperate to make the playoffs, Dumars will pass on opportunities to improve the team’s future (like trading a productive Tayshaun, Maggette, Max, or someone else who can’t figure into the team’s plans). We’ll finish with a similar win percentage, somewhere between 30 and 40. 10th in the East is about as optimistic as I can go until I see how good teams like Cleveland and Washington and Milkwaukee are. But we miss the playoffs convincingly and everyone who thought we could challenge for a 6 seed makes dumb excuses so they don’t feel ridiculous.

I think there’s a 50/50 shot of making the playoff this year. Teams like Orlando and Atlanta are no longer locks and we are going to have an interior shotblocking presence…that’s huge.

Knight’s develop will determine how much this team improves more than anything else. If he can run the offense better, we will stand a good chance to make the playoffs.
