Do the Pistons have a new Director of Player Development?

I haven’t seen it officially announced anywhere on Pistons.com yet, but Andre Drummond mentioned this in his latest ‘Summer School’ diary for the website:

I know I’ve seen Jordan (Dumars) before the Pistons drafted me. I don’t know if I’d ever played against him in AAU, but he’s a real good kid. He has a good head on his shoulders. He’s one of those good people you need in your circle to help you become a better player and a person. Just hanging around with Joe and the coaching staff has also been great. I got real close with Jason Hervey, as well – he’s our new player development director. It’s really like a family now.

Hervey previously worked for the Pistons as a video coordinator, according to their archived media guides. Last season, he worked in the scouting department for the Washington Wizards.

Filling the position is a good sign — the convoluted reshuffling of titles/roles in the front office after Scott Perry left for Orlando gave the impression that the Pistons might not fill a position. As most fans realize, the money spent on Palace upgrades and halftime entertainment/game experience improvements is nice, but the thing that will truly make a difference in attendance is investment in the basketball product itself. It’s good to see the Pistons front office apparently appears to be back to being fully staffed.

Dumars hired the brother from The Wonder Years to be the player development coach? Figures.

After reading Drummond’s journal entry yesterday, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the on and off court IQ of the Pistons squad. In addition, each article and tweet that mentions Arnie Kander’s experience, confirms my belief that Kander is Detroit’s most valuable staff member. Even more valuable than Frank & Dumars. Maggette, Drummond, Middleton, and English have all expressed their joy in having Kander around. I still recall McDyess’ recovery under Kander and Grant Hill willing to personally pay Kander to work for the Orlando Magic.

I’m sure there are more stories I’m missing.

Its amazing how in the last year this team & its profile have increased with Gores taking over. Joe D is able to make moves now.  The talent level we have begun growing and the winning attitude carry over from last year, we are now considered legit playoff contenders.  With the BG trade we will have at least 20mil in cap space next year, even without amnesting CV! The palace upgrades will certantly enhance the fan experience.  The player facilitiy upgrades will help to attract FA’s,”look at the new pistons owner spending money on the players”,(Of course money will be the biggest factor in attracting FA’s).  After the last 4-5 years of UN PISTONS like basketball, feels good to look at this team with players that work hard, have high character and are all about the team.  Good times are here again and look forward to be at the Palace when it is ROCKING!  DEEETROOOITTT BAASSKETBALLLL!!!

I loved that whole entry by Drummond. Great to see we have gotten some real high character guys in the draft the past 3 years.
