I personally would love this signing. This is the kind of talent that the Pistons should have been pursuing a few years ago instead of BG and CV. Very young, all star level talent. The question as always, does Beasley want to be great? He has more than enough talent to be an all star. Dwayne Wade said it's not whether or not he can be great, it's if he wants it. So far in his NBA career he doesn't want it. He still has time and at some point you would think he would have some personal pride after seeing all of these players he was much better than passing him by due to his poor work ethic.
Beasley will not be able to command anything near a max level deal so to me you gamble on lower cost talent, especially talent that you might be underpaying at the end of the deal if they reach their potential. Beasley is still somewhat of an unknown commodity that has enormous room for growth in his game. We knew what we were getting with Charlie V and Ben Gordon, there was no room for growth with those two players and what we were getting was not worth the money being paid.
All of that being said I personally don't think the Pistons fans, who are scared of Beasley, have much to worry about. The Pistons roster is not an ideal landing spot for Beasley. I figured he would sign with the Suns before the free agency period started and I still believe that. The Suns have room at the power forward position and I personally believe Beasley is a better power forward than a small forward. He knows this too. If he wants to prove people wrong he needs to find a team where he can get most of his minutes at the 4 instead of being forced into the 3 position where the Timberwolves and Heat played him.

Granted, I wouldn't want a really expensive long term deal. More like $20-25M/5 yrs.

Unlike some others here, I am all about the long-term contract. Yeah, it's risky. But that is how you get phenomenal value. How do you think the "Going to Work" Pistons were formed? Billups and Wallace were given mid-levelish deals long term. So then when they turned out to exceed expectations, they weren't suddenly due a big raise. Dumars had several more years to fill out his team, win a championship, and get close a couple times before Wallace commanded an inflated offer from Chicago and Billups had to be given 8 digits too.

Beasley is intriguing indeed. At 6'10", he enters the rotation as either a backup to tayshan or greg. If the Ukrainian and Drummond can provide defense, looks like Frank will use the center position in a manner similar to Wallace. There a lot players to trade with after that, but not sure Minnesota wants any of them: Singler, Maggate, Bynum, Daye, CV. Which would you want?

It's easy to say its wasted money when you dont have to pay it. What is that the gold standard in Detroit now, when you under perform we just amnesty you? I think Gores has better ways of spending his money than sending a player to another team for him to pay while he plays and performs for someone else. Makes no fiscal sense this year and the Piston's gain nothing by cutting him, all the while losing a commodity around the NBA, a stretch four who can spread the floor. This is it for Charlie V. either he will get it or he won't. Just doubt that Gores will just throw money around like that. Can't have a team full of bangers and shot blockers. Team needs diversified parts to make teams pick their poison and balance everyone on team out. I like Beasely and think he could be something special(kinda like Drummond) but damn get rid of Charlie V for a known pot head, smh. If not for anything other than their personalities alone. Thats a whole other debate.

I can't imagine roster space being an impediment. If we're willing to depart with them for close to nothing I'm certain we can move Bynum, Daye, Singler or Maxiell. I would love for us to keep Singler and I have no problem keeping the other guys I mentioned, but I would rather have Beasley.
Also I think amnestying Charlie is more viable than a lot of people seem to think. If you view his contract as wasted money it doesn't really cost anything to pay him now, it's money the Pistons have to spend and we're going to get nothing out of it either way. Then it just becomes a question of whether Beasley, or whomever, is a good investment. If he or they are, then the fact that CV has to be bought out shouldn't matter. So the question is really are we truly trying to be as good as possible next year. If yes, then seems like we have to ditch CV while we can.

Agreed, Tom. And, WE can make room for him. For instance, if the Trailblazers are not able to sign Batum, WE can offer them both Tay and Daye; or if the Lakers continue to become disgruntled with Artest and Matt Barnes ... again, WE can offer up Tay and Daye. I would also move the rights to Kyle Singler to anybody willing to take his what will be a very portable contract off of OUR hands.

Do it Joe, because WE need a skilled and long SF in OUR starting line-up.

And, like many have already stated, the dude is still very young.
