Pistons could have interest in free agent Sonny Weems

Alex Kennedy of Hoops World:

That should be no surprise the Pistons would have interest as they need depth at small forward, and Weems is a young but experienced player who could fill that role. I actually kind of liked Weems when he was in Toronto, particularly in 2009-10, when he averaged seven points per game off the Raptors’ bench and shot above 50 percent.

I would have no problem signing him and dropping Charlie V via amnesty…hopefully we’re able to trade Prince for a late first or early second round pick and we snag a big man to help Monroe in the paint. A starting line up of Stuckey, Knight, Weems, Lenoard/Henson/Jones and Monroe with BG, JJ and Singler off the bench sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

        Weems>Prince

At least Weems wouldn’t try and have plays drawn for him like washed up Tay does for himself. How many shots Tay took when it was crunch time is amazing especially since he missed all of them…

This is if they actually do amnesty Charlie tho, the cap room saved would only be enough to get someone at the veteran minimum I think.

Imo, they should explore trade options for Maxiel and Bynum and either for a veteran pg for just to dump space to be able to sign one. We are full at the SF spot with singler coming back, leaving prince as the only player who’s won a playoff series. (I personally would try trading Daye too)

And of of course our first draft pick on a big, saw something about Drummond being available? Gotta be dumb not to bite that.
starters: BK, Stuckey, Prince, 1st pick, Monroe
Bench: VeteranPG, BG, Singler, JJ, Macklin. (+ the 2 second round picks if not traded as incentives to take the guys I mentioned above)

Although weems isnt a starter, We could go pry alonzo gee away from cleveland or keep prince and trade into the late first for fab melo also.

Weems doesn’t strike me as a Piston-type player, honestly. He’s mostly disinterested defensively and takes a ton of bad shots (I take that back, he sounds exactly like a 2011-2012 Piston, which is the problem). The last thing this team needs is more players taking bad shots. We would be better served playing Jonas more at the 3 and grabbing a wing defender (we currently have 0 strong wing defenders on the roster, with Knight being the only one with that potential).
I hope whomever we get at the 9th pick is ready to start early.

Well, that’s how he played his second season in Toronto. His first season, he was a nice energy player in limited minutes, athletic, runs the floor, finishes and didn’t take a lot of bad shots that season. So I guess I’d be cautiously in favor of him, depending on the price and which version of Weems they’re investing in.

I keep hearing that Golden State needs a SF.  Joe D should see if they would trade their lotto pick for Prince.  I think if Joe is rebuilding let the younger guys get minutes and start to gel together.  I would like to see more of JJ.  Amnesty wise BG makes more sense fiscally speaking but CV is a waste and should go instead but if you don’t have BG starting then you won’t optimize his salary.  Trade for future 1st rounder(yes I know he hasn’t shown much but can’t hurt to try) or let him get more minutes and see if that will get him going because if I recall he did fairly well in preseason.  Just my 2 cents.

The SFs GS was reportedly interested in are/were Gay, Iguodala and Granger, so I don’t think they’re thinking players as limited as Prince, at least not for their lottery pick. Perhaps Detroit could swap Prince for their pick and a bad contract like Biedrins, but I still don’t think GS would do that.

I would love to swap Prince for Biedrins and a minor asset (maybe a protected future first). I don’t expect anything out of Biedrins, but there is always the chance that a change of scenery would do him good. And he is the athletic big man that could perfectly complement Monroe if he returns to his previous level at all. More importantly, he expires first. And getting rid of Prince would make be great particularly if the Pistons did wind up with PJIII.

Who…? Jesus Christ..I honestly have no idea who this is.. Hopefully there will be a couple of guards taken before #9 to help this team out (with getting a somewhat athletic big, down low)..slightly..The Pistons need as much “fresh” young talent as possible. I don’t need to see CV, BG, Damien Wilkins, Jason Maxiell, Ben Wallace, etc… By the way, is there an update on the rumor that the organization was planning on creating a new alternate 3rd uniform..?

Haha … Weems isn’t that bad. Run of the mill bench guy, an upgrade over Daye/Wilkins. He’d be fine if they don’t overpay.

Haven’t heard on the uniforms yet. Maybe they will unveil an alternate jersey that is a button-down, with the top four buttons unbuttoned in honor of Gores.

He’s not bad, but he’s the kind of guy you pay for to fill out your team when it’s already good. You don’t waste money that could end up being cap space in the next couple years on him when you are still bad/mediocre.

I may be way off base but this is clearly another shot across the bow of everyone’s (mine) favorite whipping boy Austin Daye!.   Are we going to see another 82 game season of hand clapping after every blown assignment, every missed rebound and foul committed from being out of position?  If Daye had shown anything, the Pistons would have no need of this as the improvement would come from within the team.   The Pistons are clearly signaling early that minutes will have to be earned and will not be give to Austin Daye.   Here comes Damien Wilkens 2.0
