Pistons could be interested in Iona product Scott Machado

Scott Machado already has a loud cheering section if you venture over to Detroit Bad Boys, where they’ve been high on him for quite some time, with good reason. He’s an efficient, improving pass-first pure point guard who posted fantastic shooting numbers as a senior at Iona. He’s a bit undersized and faces the same competition-level questions that every Mid-Major player faces upon entering the NBA, but it’s a good bet that if he were a couple inches taller, he’d be a lock for the first round. As it stands, he’s probably one of the favorites to be the steal of this year’s second round. So the fact that the Pistons are potentially interested, according to Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News, is great to hear:

“I know how to run a team,” Machado said. “I feel I’m an all-around point guard, it’s what I know to do.”

Machado will work out for the Pistons next week, according to Goodwill. Everyone understands the need for depth at the guard spot with the futures of Will Bynum and Ben Gordon in Detroit far from certain and Walker Russell probably a longshot to be brought back, so it makes sense from that perspective that the Pistons would look at Machado. But I’ve also been a big advocate of them adding a guard who is content to just be a distributor to their rotation as a way to alleviate some of the pressure on Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey, two players capable of running an offense but who are also more comfortable attacking and looking for their own offense first. As much as I love Bynum when he’s healthy and contributing, he’s essentially just a micro version of Knight and Stuckey — a shoot-first guard who does have the ability to set up others, but it isn’t his first inclination. Machado would be that change of pace guy they need, a guard with skillset that is unique from the other guards on the roster.

I think Machado could be a great second round addition.  I worry more that a team like the Lakers might think he’s a good end of first round option than anything else.  I think if he’d played for a major conference he’d be a borderline lottery pick.  He will surprise some people.  He’s got real ability.
