Greg Monroe getting Team USA consideration

Marc Stein of ESPN:

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Sacramento Kings power forward DeMarcus Cousins, Detroit Pistons center Greg Monroe and incoming Kentucky star Anthony Davis — widely regarded as a lock to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft — are among the young big men under consideration to be among the late additions Colangelo mentioned.

Team USA has lost several players from its roster due to injury (Derrick Rose, Chauncey Billups, Dwight Howard and LaMarcus Aldridge) and reality TV (Lamar Odom). Monroe, with his high post passing ability, would be really fun to watch in international basketball, where great passing big men are a given on most of the top national teams. I don’t think I have to tell anyone how it’s quite an accomplishment for Monroe to even be given consideration for a spot when you look back and remember how little attention he got for his great rookie season a year ago.

This is GREAT!  i knew he would have to be considered for the young select team that practices against the Senior team, BUT to be considered for the Senior is Outstanding.  To be able to play with all those great players.  I would think Monroe would be the number option out of those three, because of Cousins maturity issues displayed this year and because Davis has not played a minute of NBA ball. Davis has the better defense, Monroe better offense. So i think that will be the decider Davis defense vs. Monroe’s offense and experience.

I think Davis is the frontrunner for the spot, simply because without Dwight, they only have one defensive-minded big in Tyson Chandler. Love, Griffin and Bosh are also on the extended roster, but none of those three guys are great defenders. Davis is no Dwight, but he could definitely make up for some of the shot blocking they are losing with Dwight out.

Just read the full article and they are actually looking for two guys.  So maybe both Monroe and Davis make it.  And to your point with Davis, i think Davis duplicates Chandler, two non-scoring shot blocking bigs.  I think the team looks for versatility, which Monroe provides a little bit more of than Davis.  Also i think by losing Dwight they are losing some down low offense which Davis would not be able to provide.

What a great way to gain national attention he deserved! This guy was overlooked because he was on a bad team this year. Plus, this will make him that much more better considering the other great players he will be surrounded with if he goes. Everyone that played on the teams seemed to get alot better when they returned. I hope he gets the nod.

Man, Anthony Davis isn’t going to be considered…The guy is a rookie, we don’t know if he’s going to be a bust or not…

Hmm … Marc Stein says Davis is being considered, Jodi Jezz says he isn’t. Whose report should we take seriously?

hahaha, it would be wise to always take most of my post seriously…I guarantee the soon to be ROOKIE Anthony Davis is not being considered to play for the USA team…Don’t always listen to what you hear, smh…

When I say considered, I mean seriously considered to actually play for the USA team…Someone might have mentioned his name, but I highly doubt a player that hasn’t played a single Pro game is going to be picked to play for the USA Team…

Christian Laettner? Emeka Okafor? It doesn’t happen often, but it’s not unprecedented. Davis has a skill that they desperately need with Howard out — shot blocking. He’s a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the draft and he’s one of the best college prospects in the last 10 years or so. It’s not like they’re trying to put Tyler Zeller on the team or something. Whether Davis reaches his ceiling or not, he’s already a better shot blocker than just about any guy in the NBA.

Well if you ask Stein, he will probably tell you he has been wrong before. If you so much as suggest that Jodi Jezz may have been wrong once upon a time, I believe that relegates you to not being a real NBA fan or something like that. So there’s one take on who you should believe.

Well said Pat…I guess I’m the only one who thinks Davis isn’t going to be as good as others think…

Well hopefully this happens and monroe takes in that USA experience that raised a whole bunch of that rosters NBA defense to another level. And I think Bill Simmons called it lol. At least with Davis
