If we are amnestying for cap space then it has to be Ben Gordon. He isn’t exactly winning games for us and makes about $4 million more a season than Charlie.

There is also a much larger probability that Charlie opts out than BG. No way Gordon walks away from the 14 million or so on the final year of his contract. Charlie might walk away from his 9 million for a 4 year 6 million dollar deal. So give Gordon the ax.

He might be able to get a multiple year deal that gives him security at a lower per year number that equals a much greater overall contract when weighed against a single year deal.

Having cap flexibility is the #1 reason to amnesty him. Even if there isn’t a free agent Joe likes he should still amnesty him so he has an opportunity to get extra assets (draft picks) for taking on other teams contracts. Cavs?

Why wouldn’t he pick up his option? It’s not like he’s going to make more money somewhere else, especially after the past 3 seasons.

I haven’t looked at the Pistons’ cap numbers, but I think the case for amnestying him is that it gives the Pistons more flexibility in making a trade later on in the season, and they can only amnesty him in the offseason. Also, if they don’t sign a free agent this offseason and keep CV — and we end up with a crappy draft pick — I might be done with the NBA altogether for a while.

I was going to say the same thing, Aruna, if something comes along and the Pistons need cap space to acquire a player then they may amnesty CV to get that space but other than that why amnesty the guy, he’s working hard, the guys love him, he’s a good teamate, hey maybe he cracks the rotation next yr and actually gains some value so he can be tradded. So many reasons not to amnesty and only one good reason to amnesty.

I’ve got a feeling that they will only amnesty CV if there’s a reason for it. Specifically if they need the cap-room to sign a free agent. I don’t think Charlie picks up his option for 2013, so next year he’s on the last year of his contract. Unless you have need for that cap room or roster spot immediately, why pay him to not be here? Now a buyout is a completely different thing.
