Pistons requesting to wear alternate uniform in 2013-14

Keith Langlois of Pistons.com:

Teams must submit uniform designs to NBA headquarters for approval and the process requires the submissions be made well in advance of use. The Pistons are submitting an alternate uniform to the NBA for approval for use in the 2013-14 season

As a traditionalist, I hope it’s either red or a throwback.

Do you think this is an attempt to hide that they are a mediocre (at best) team? Or is it to lure in free agents (ala the Oregon Ducks – errr – Miami Heat)?

I think it’s an attempt to make money by selling jerseys. Same thing good teams do.

Awww Dan, I was just trying to be funny!

But to your point, best way to sell jerseys is to have a marketable player…(praying for Anthony Davis)!

Red would be nice. I really liked those. I didn’t like the last throwbacks one bit. So drab.

The 2013-2014 team will look so different from todays.  I think the jersey will serve as an attempt to market this new look team with fresh players to the rest of the league & nation.

It should. Gordon and Villanueva will have expiring contracts, so they should be movable by then. And we’ll have two new additions through the lottery. God willing Tayshaun will have been moved to a contender for something young and useful.

Agreed.  Plus the last year is a player option, so if either show any life, they could be gone during the prior season or off-season

I can see them going with the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons uniforms. The logo looks like the tin man from the wizard of oz

The Pistons have had alternate jerseys off and on since the early 90s – actually all of the non-throwback one’s have been a variation of the color red. I used to work in the merchandising department at the Palace and there are several more ground rules the NBA places out there for alternate uniforms: teams are only allowed to wear them a certain number of games a year, etc. etc. The reason the team got away with wearing the red uni’s so often during its latest reincarnation is because the main colors fell within the team’s current colors.

Another thing the NBA regulates are player numbers and names on the warm up attire – teams that have those stiched on the jackets/shooting shirts/etc. are fined each game that they wear that attire. I haven’t paid close attention to it this season – mainly because it looks like adidas took a nice duece on them – but this was a tradition in Detroit that dated decades back.

I personally wouldn’t mind seeing a variation of a black jersey. Think the home white’s but instead of white it would be black with the red/white/blue stripe down the sides, blue neck and sholder trip, red numbers and wording. As long as they stay away from the Bulls/Magic/Horents pin striping I will be fine though.

IMO the Pistons are one of the leagues finest teams regarding identity. It looks good! The alternate will probably be red and a bit retro, something like these: http://sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=n3y6c3pd1eqakesi0vf8ewl49

And with a little cleanup by Joe D (his own mess) we could have a pretty good team in the near future. Stay positive Pistons fans.

Piston uniforms are so basic and plain.  They need to design a whole new look even if it means adding a another color to it.

I have to disagree, Pistons have a very clean and classic look, and the logo is awesome cause it’s a modern version of the Bad Boys Era logo. This would be a nice change and it’s also a part of histoy (maybe in red…):
