Former Piston Isiah Thomas now giving advice to a Chicago Bull

This would’ve been unthinkable 30 years ago, but Bulls star Derrick Rose wants to become a champion. So naturally, he sought out advice from a point guard who won two titles, former Piston and Chicago native Isiah Thomas. From Melissa Isaacson of ESPN Chicago:

Isiah Thomas said he met Rose last year after a game in Detroit and that Rose contacted him after the Bulls’ season had ended.

“He was pretty down,” Thomas told ESPNChicago.com by phone on Wednesday. “He asked me ‘How did you do it? How did you win back-to-back championships at this size?’ And my response to him was that once you understand your opponent and know your opponent better than you know yourself, you’ll win.” …

Rose understands Thomas’ historical standing in both Chicago basketball and the NBA.

“… He’s somebody where in Chicago, you definitely got to look up to, especially being a guard, winning championships in this league,” Rose said. “[I] try to take things out of his game and put them into mine. But [he's] a cool dude. I played against his son in AAU. And he’s from Chicago so I got to look up to him.”

I don’t know about Isiah Thomas’ advice but it’s cool that Derrick Rose knows who he is and values his advice too many guys overlook Isiah.

Yeah. It’s hard not to like Rose, compared to some of the other star players in the league.

Yeah but he is probably still the most similar player in today’s NBA.

Isiah pound for pound the best point guard in his era. True grit and great talent in all phases of the game. I do not think he is appreciated enough. Winning back to back titles is still an accomplishment and could have been 3 if he had not gotten injured in the Finals vs. LA. D. Rose has been wise to seek out his homeboy’s advice.

Isiah is the only comparable player to Rose to ever lead his team to a championship so Rose would be wise to emulate him.  I’ve always hated almost anyone on the Bulls not named Rodman, Salley, Edwards, Hunter, Wallace or Hamilton (Jeez, they actually love Pistons apparently) but Rose’s lack of hubris and attitude in general makes him something of an exception for me.
