I get what you are saying and I understand it. I guess where I disagree with you is that if singler were not in Spain, I dont think that Wilkins makes it out of camp and the Pistons do exactly what you say. Load up on young guys. But you already know you are going to be crap, so go with a known commodity and give the coach one less headache since your plans didnt go that way. As we see it looks like they are standing pat and arent going to make any moves so we have to suffer as fans. I dont think that Dumars thought that Daye would struggle this much. That would have eliminated Wilkins from playing time as well as CV being out. No one saw that. So you are right, but I dont really think for these circumstances there was a way around doing this this time.

wikins is a symbol. jsut as guys like daye and summers are symbols. when i dicsuss wither of those players i’m talking about the manner in which players like them – delfino, amir, afflalo, etc – have been treated by the organization.
there have also been a long line of wilkins-like retreads who have come through town and put back the team’s progress. last year it was t-mac; this year wilkins.
i don’t blame or especially dislike the players. i often prasie what t-mac did for the team last year.
can’t blame them. t-mac got exactly what he wanted…PT and a chance to prove that he could still play so that he could set himself up in a better situation, for one last good contract.
wilikins is just trying to stay in the league for the paycheck.
the coaches have been trying to win every game so they go with a predictable vet, over erratic young players who are still finding their game and place in the league.
can’t blame either the coaches or the players, ultimately.
the problem is what the practice – bringing in guys like wilkins – when the team has been in desperate need of young blood.
and yes, it does matter if you keep a guy like wilkins – or t-mac – as opposed to investing in a younger player. for too many reasons to get into right now – they’ve been discussed ad nauseum – it is fundamental that when you rebuild, you load up on young guys, play them, see who fits and discard the ones who do not, for whatever reason.
signing and playing old players who do not fit, at all, into a team’s long term rebuilding is directly contrary to and harmful to what the team should be doing.
so, yes, it does matter. and damien wilkins is just another symbol of what the team has been doing wrong the last few years.

LOL, I know you have a hard on for Wilkins, but I see what you are saying. IMO there is no correct answer when you are rebuilding and have a crappy team. I really did not like Summers so I have no problem with Wilkins, until you replace him with another prospect like Singler. But that didnt work out either so we have to go with what we have.

funny, dan didn’t mention wilkins’ stats.
1 point. 1 assist. 14 minutes. zero shots. that was it. wilkins has had plenty of those kinds of games. and he’s a lousy defender on top of it.
as i noted, this is a comparison, on some level, and the idea that a supposedly rebuilding team would choose a player like wilkins over a cheaper, younger player with better numbers and the possibility of upside is curious, to say the least.

so…
on a rebuilding team you would prefer a 32 year old player with worse numbers across the board, over a young player with better numbers? and the younger player is cheaper.
the issue is not, objectively, is summers a great player?
this is a matter of comparison.
wilkins v summers.
and any competent coach can teach a player how ti pass the ball into the post.

I know its a joke headline, but I was not a fan of Summers at all. He got thrown in there last year because everyone was acting like idiots, but he did not show anything at all other than MAYBE being a journeyman. Under those circumstances i had no problem letting him go.
