Ben Wallace says Greg Monroe is ready to lead the Pistons

Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News has a great feature on Greg Monroe‘s emergence not only as a highly productive player, but as a vocal presence in the locker room. The article has plenty of serious stuff, such as Ben Wallace’s belief that Monroe is ready to take over as the team’s vocal leader right now, but it’s also full of entertaining quotes like this one:

Monroe considers himself diverse, and wants to be defined as more than a basketball player.

He listens to rappers Rick Ross, Drake and 2 Chainz, but also has Katy Perry on his iPod.

He’s also been caught humming the opening lyrics of Ike and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” a song that came out nearly 20 years before Monroe was born.

The New Orleans native can’t help it sometimes, being called an old soul by just about anyone who comes around him.

“I know people say that (laughs),” said Monroe, whose nickname is “Moose”, but the one that fits slightly better is “Pa-Pa,” given to him by a girl he knew in high school in reference to his old man nature.

“I know it’s a compliment. It just comes from being where I’m from.”

For me, he´s already one of the more vocal Piston on the floor. I  wish he was not yelling so ofen that “And One!” after every basket but I can live with it. Referees are not going to take him seriously by doing that, he better stop it. But anyway, he has a great reference point in Wallace. Hopefully he takes advantage of the remaining games and learns as much as possible from Wallace, a deffensive beast in the past but still  having a lot to show to youngsters in the present. Let´s add “improve defense” to Monroe´s to-do list for this season…Monroe has already already his quick hands (much more during last season) and that´s something you won´t learn easily. He´s not an outstanding athlete, but he doesn´t need that to become an all-star. Several times he´s so slow in switches and seems to get lost when he has to help his mates.

wow, what a diverse musical palette! Katy Perry and Rick Ross?  and he knows one of the most famous songs in the history of US popular music?  He must be really deep.  WTF, I hate articles like this.  A bunch of nonsense

Haha, why do you hate articles like that? It’s just showing a bit of Monroe’s personality. Nothing to get worked up about.

meh, hate was probably too strong a word.  I think they are fluff that give no real insight into a player as a person.  Which basically reflects on the limited access media has to actually get to know players in today’s game.  Now, if he was humming ravel’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an exhibition and had, say, fred eaglesmith and betty davis on his MP3 player……

ok, just kidding.  it still does little to really say something about a player and is a typical no bball to talk about fluff piece.
