LeBron James and Chris Bosh take on Pistons, likely without Dwyane Wade

Essentials

  • Teams: Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons
  • Date: Jan. 25, 2012
  • Time: 7:30 p.m.
  • Television: Fox Sports Detroit

Records

  • Pistons: 4-14
  • Heat: 12-5

Probable starters

Pistons:

Heat:

  • Mario Chalmers
  • James Jones
  • LeBron James
  • Chris Bosh
  • Joel Anthony

Las Vegas projection

Spread: Pistons +8.5

Over/under: 187.5

Score: Heat win, 98-89.5

Three things to watch

1. Dwyane Wade?

Dwyane Wade flew to Detroit, but none of the Heat Index writers expect him to play. This doesn’t really affect the Pistons chances of winning. (They won’t.) But if you’re headed to The Palace to see the Big Three, count on just two.

2. Austin Daye bouncing back?

After a late-night shooting session with his personal trainer, will Austin Daye break out of his slump tonight? Probably not, but it’s fun to hope. Keith Langlois of Pistons.com at least expects Daye to receive extended minutes again.

Remember, Daye found himself, somewhat, against the Heat last year.

3. Rough waters ahead

After Monday’s loss to the Thunder, the Pistons’ schedule doesn’t get much easier. Their next there games are vs. the Heat, vs. the Hawks and at the 76ers.

Damien Wilkins, via David Mayo of MLive.com (emphasis mine):

“The next four or five games, all the teams are above .500, with playoff and championship aspirations,” Wilkins said. “We’ve certainly got our work cut out for us. It doesn’t take a long time to figure out if guys are up to the challenge or not.”

I fear Wilkins is correct.

Please be gentle Mr LeBron. Even if you don’t at least you wont have to play the 4th quarter because it will be over by the 1st.

No Tay tonight with apparent family matter. Yeah right he just doesn’t want 40-50 dropped on him by LeBron tonight. This could get ugly :-(

unlikely given that detroit plays the slowest in the league and the Heat without Wade play real slow too.

Its because Daye is just spot up shooting and not attempting to dribble.. I wish he could play better D though. But this is a great improvement already!

Yeah that and spot up shooting.. I can’t help but wonder how many times I’ve watched him lose the ball dribbling in the last few games

I have a lot of respect for the players’ private lives, but I’ve never seen this many “personal matter” absences in my 25+ years as Pistons fan. Kinda strange.

Of course, this is only the second time in 22 years for a compressed schedule, so that has a lot to do with it.

If this is a joke, that’s the funniest fucking comment I’ve seen here in months. If it’s not, God help you. (For several reasons, not the least of which being that he cannot be traded until March 1.)

It was a joke. I have been on a sarcastic posting rage all day. I know Tay isn’t going anywhere and i guess i am glad someone responded to it in a sane manner.

I think Daye has scored more points in the 1st half than he has for the whole so season. Take his face off the milk carton because he has been found. Can you trade a player during a half time break?? You don’t know when he will go cold again (jokes, just jokes)

100% of people who are aware Austin Daye exists know what he’s capable of. He’s the sole reward for the 08-09 Allen Iverson debacle, and there’s a decision coming up on whether or not to give him a qualifying offer. It would be generous to guess Wilkins gives us even four more wins over the course of the season, considering his niche role. The only time I’d even play the guy over Daye is when the opposing team has as physical and dominant a SF as the Heat. Because face it, the guy would get murdered, probably hurt, and he’d get attacked on every possession.

Also, I heard on the radio that the Pistons are dead last in the league in possessions per game. You gotta be fucking kidding me if that’s true. Same exact shit as when we had a slow, plodding veteran team that actually excelled at half-court sets. It’s insanity.

If you cast your eyes to the overall standings you will see that by the end of next week could be dead last in the standings too. The Wizards just beat the Bobcats and teams play each other again next week so with our schedule not getting any easier don’t be surprised if it happens.

4-14 Pistons (probably soon to be 4-15)
3-14 Hornets (probably soon to be 3-15)
      3-15 Wizards
      3-16 Bobcats

I always roll my eyes when I hear talk about “Should the Pistons tank?” Uh… What the fuck are they doing now?? This is them TRYING to win! What’s the fucking difference? It’s not like there are many teams they’ll have to take a fall against or anything.

Oh well…different effort tonight…same result. Those 2 missed free throws by Knight at the end could of put us up 5 but instead LeBron hits 2 of his own and it was over. Good effort but you get the feeling the Heat only played as hard as they had to for the win.

great to see him do well.
i will let others decide if they think his breakout coincidentally happened when tay was not around, and he was assured of PT. i think the answer is pretty clear.
