I believe he has Bird rights to Stuckey. So the Prince signing is irrelevant.

Well, the team is probably better off without Rip. Maybe buying him out makes it easier to make roster moves while remaining under the tax line (like re-signing Stuckey and adding a MLE big man), but the bottom line is that Joe is looking at the same damn roster with the same damn problems unless he changes something. He probably explored his options and realized this was the best one he had, which shows how bad a mess he's made. Shame since in another year he would be a tradeable asset, but this is where we're at. This looks more like Joe saving face than anything. Now at least his perimeter is down to a manageable six man rotation with pretty clear roles (Knight/Bynum, Stuckey/Gordon, Prince/Daye), so the product on the floor should be less of a muddled clusterf*ck.

And yes I'm focusing on Rip being waived here, but that's the news of the day.

Yes, Rip's contract counts against our salary cap, but only to the amount that the buyout was for because he was waived, not amnestied. Whatever he was bought out for would be spread over two years. I assume he chose to be bought for significantly less than he is full contract, so that he had his pick of where to go, instead of being amnestied and being picked up off of waivers.
Love this move by Dumars...finally owning up to his mistakes again. This is what he used to do when players wanted to go/had to go and glad to see him do it again with a new owner. Now we will be able to see if Ben Gordan has anything left.

yup. but not the full amount. i'm not sure if it's half the buyout amount or half his original contract amount. google it. either way he still counts somewhere between $4-6.25 million against the cap this season, and next, which is better than $12.5 i suppose.

A young prospect who played better than Tayshaun is very assuredly worth a bigger contract than Tay... I think Stuckey was worth about what Prince ended up getting (with a difference in years offered), but now that Tay has been given ~7-7.5 million it raises Stuckey's price.

Does waiving Rip still count against our salary cap?

Well if Prince is worth $7.5 mil per year, CV $7.5, Rip $12.5, Max $5, Jerebko $4, Gordon $12, and I'm assuming these are all fair market value because what GM would be foolish enough to overpay for every single player on his roster...oh wait. Well anyways it's safe to assume Stuckey's fair market value is somewhere between $10-15 million per season given the data previously presented. What's the cap looking like these days? What are we at about $60 million? That leaves about $12 million before we hit the luxury, so I'm going with a 5 year $60 million contract.
