Pistons announce training camp invites

We told you about D-Leaguer Walker Russell Jr. getting a training camp invite, and the team announced three others today in a release:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Detroit Pistons announced today the signings of Jake Voskuhl, Kareem Rush, Walker Russell Jr. and Brian Hamilton to the 2011-12 training camp roster.

Voskuhl was drafted 33rd by the Chicago Bulls in the 2000 NBA Draft. He’s played in 450 career NBA games with the Bulls, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Bobcats, Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors. Voskuhl has averaged 4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 14.3 minutes in his NBA career. The 6-foot-11 center was a member of the University of Connecticut’s Men’s Basketball team that won the 1999 NCAA Championship.

Rush has played in 346 NBA games after being selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors and having his draft rights traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He’s spent time with the Lakers, Bobcats, Pacers, and Clippers during his seven-year NBA career. His younger brother, Brandon, has spent the last three seasons with the Indiana Pacers.

Russell Jr., a local product from Rochester, MI, is the son of former Piston Walker D. Russell. Russell Jr. averaged 17.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and 7.9 assists in 37 games last season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. Russell Jr. was a member of the Pistons’ team at the 2007 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and was invited to the New York Knicks’ 2007-08 training camp.

Hamilton is currently a member of the L.A. D-Fenders of the NBA Development League. Coming into this season, he averaged 9.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 135 D-League games for the Utah Flash. The Louisiana-Lafayette product made the Flash at an open tryout and was invited to the New Jersey Nets’ 2008-09 training camp after playing for the Nets’ summer league team at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Revue.

Rush and Voskuhl are NBA vets. Voskuhl would have an outside shot at making the roster simply because he’s big and the team needs a backup or two. Rush’s chances didn’t look good until the team waived Rip Hamilton and then Rodney Stuckey tweeted his desire to leave. Suddenly, the team doesn’t have as much guard depth as originally though, so Rush or Russell might push for a spot with a great camp.

Free Agent weekend and again the big names are all headed elsewhere.  The closest we came to announcing a big name was the header that advised of Rip leaving.  This morning we’re awakened by the announcement of four warm bodies (with or without a pulse) being added the camp roster.  Gone is the “don’t blink” disclaimer because we’re bad enough that one of these corpses might just catch on with the circus…. er, team.
