Dumars not pressured to hire Catanella

When the Pistons announced that Joe Dumars had hired Ken Catanella as the team’s Director of Basketball Operations, the news was met with guarded optimism. Catanella has a great track record in basketball analytics, but based on Detroit’s history with statistics, or lack thereof, it wasn’t clear whether or not the organization intended to take full advantage of his expertise.

Pistons President Dennis Mannion gave fans of analytics a reason to get their hopes up at today’s Palace media event. While discussing his belief in the importance of advanced statistics, Mannion noted that when Dumars hired Catanella for his new role, “there was no gun to his head.”

Mannion is no stranger to advanced stats himself, as he indicated that the Los Angeles Dodgers took advantage of similar analysis when he served as President of that organization. If his implication is correct and Dumars is also a believer, Pistons fans have another big reason to get excited about the future of the franchise.

Hmm… honestly, it doesn’t excite me about the future, it just has me less worried about us still living in the stone age. Why exactly has it taken this long to adopt? In my opinion, any GM who is not using advanced stats for personnel decisions should be fired on the spot unless they’re consistently making the playoffs past the first round. When would you ever not want to have more information to base decision making off?

And yes, before you say anything, I’ve read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell and fully understand the power of expertise on making “gut” decisions — which is why I said that any GM not making the playoffs should be fired, not any GM.

Well, when you consider this GM did make the playoffs 8 consecutive times, including 2 Finals, 1 Championship, and 6 straight CF’s w/o using A.S., I think thats enough reason for him to not use them w/o being fired for it. smh.

Now that he hasnt made the playoff in 2 years, he’s re-thinking his gameplan. Considering he likely wasnt allowed to hire  anyone to do it during Karens ownership anyways, I dont know what you were really expecting.
