Brandon Knight and Vernon Macklin sign with Pistons

Brandon Knight and Vernon Macklin have officially signed with the Pistons, according to Pistons.com.

Most first-round picks – besides those drafted by the Grizzlies – get 120 percent of the rookie scale. Before being signed, though, they count against the cap at 100 percent of the scale. Macklin wouldn’t have counted against the cap at all until signed.

Apparently, the Pistons had no interest in preserving enough cap room to bid on amnestied players like Chauncey Billups.

Hopefully Knight will fill in Detroits need for a play-maker as the team is alreday crowded with shoot first players in an already crowded back court.

I can’t comprehend how amnestied players (like Arenas) aren’t getting bid on. For instance, if the PIstons had bid a vet’s minimum for whatever the maximum number of years they could offer (4?), presumably it would have been the highest bid since Arenas cleared waivers without any bids. While I ma not high on Arenas at his point, surely that would be a risk worth taking. Worst case scenario, they could cut him and be out about $1M for the next couple seasons. Best case scenario, he becomes a starting quality guard who at a minimum contract, could be instrumental in returning to contention or flipped for several assets from a contender.

Guys like Arenas and Billups are threatening to be disgruntled on non-contending teams. So far, that threat has allowed both players to escape the waiver process. Should the Pistons call their bluff and hope to change their minds? Not sure their is a right answer, even if your getting a bargain.

tarsier – You do know that amnestied players cannot be traded til like June 1st or July 1st right.. So there is now way you could flip Gilbert til the summer……
