When I was a kid (back in the '60s), everyone I knew listened to the Tigers on WJR. Of course, in the off season WJR had Pistons coverage so I listened to that as well. But I really became a fan when I started watching the team on Channel 50. They used Sun Goddess by Ramsey Lewis as theme music and had lots of blaxploitation advertising. And Bing and Lanier were great. I remember Werner Wolf co-hosting with Lanier when Lanier was injured and not dressing. There was Wolf standing beside this enormous suit jacket. Then he'd hand the microphone up to Lanier and the camera would pan up. Games at Cobo Halll in the day were exciting, with a loud crowd pumped up by the little light display at the top of the centre scoreboard (two for the money when Eric Money scored). I remember people used to chant "news" for Marvin "Bad News" Barnes (which became Lou in the summer for Lou Whitaker). Then I moved to Toronto and nearly gave up until the draft that brought Isaiah Thomas and Kelly Tripuka. I thought, these guys are winners and the team is on the right track. So I've never looked back. I remember the series against Boston and "Bird steals the ball" and taking a very long walk along the Lakeshore until like 2:00 a.m. But it was a step towards that first "ship" so I guess it was worth it. Ups and downs, it's all part of the game.
