I haven't read this one, but it's now on my list. I know what you mean about the NYC playground legends. They have a deep rooted history there, much of it preserved by word of mouth, but helped by Rick Telander's "Heaven is a Playground" that exposed many of these legends in the 70s. Rucker Park is legendary and it seems that many of the players who made their names there are revered just as much as NBA greats. Obvious names like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Nate Archibald, Walt Frazier, and Bernard King are at the same level as names like Joe Hammond, Fly Williams, Pee-Wee Kirkland, and Loyd Daniels in those circles. I've always been fascinated by this - that basketball is a sport that transcends organization and the art and beauty of it can be witnessed without cameras or stats and preserved for future generations. It doesn't seem like other major sports can say this.
