Rodney White charged with managing “elaborate” marijuana-growing scheme

Steve Lyttle of The Charlotte Observer:

Rodney White, who led UNC Charlotte’s basketball team to the 2001 NCAA tournament and was a first-round NBA draft pick, was arrested Tuesday in Iredell County and charged with managing what investigators called "an elaborate" marijuana-growing operation in Alexander and Iredell counties.

"During the search, an elaborate underground bunker was located, where detectives found a hidden marijuana grow room," Redmond said.

Based on that discovery, agents got a search warrant for a residence on Montibello Drive in Mooresville. Redmond said detectives found more than four pounds of marijuana; an assortment of firearms; grow lights; planting materials; and other items used to grow marijuana. Investigators said they also found items that linked the residence to the Alexander County operation.

White and Jackson were charged with felony manufacture of marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; maintaining a dwelling for marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia. White also was charged with conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, Redmond said.

White also faced gun charges when he played for the Nuggets. Since the Pistons drafted White No. 9 overall, his life has pretty much gone in the wrong direction.

“elaborate,” huh? it sure sounds fancy, maybe fancier than it is. back in college i helped a buddy set up a grow room in his one bedroom apartment (he moved his bed to the living room. dude was dedicated.) and he had a bunch of equipment like a pretty sophisticated hydroponic irrigation system, and it seemed like that’s just pretty much what it takes to have a legitimate grow operation. so i’m guessing they’re making things sound “juicier” by dividing every grow operation into two categories: “elaborate” and “half-assed.”

this is much more fun than criticizing rip hamilton for performing exactly to any reasonable expectations!

Did he get busted in DC for driving around the hood firing rounds out the window of his car?  Not trying to shoot anyone, just out blasting off rounds for fun.  If my memory serves me correctly that’s what happened.

Anyway you look at it, this is another demonstration of why an athletic 6-9 guy wasn’t able to at least squeak out a nest egg in the NBA.  A guy like him could just show up and probably end up making $15-20 million over 6-8 seasons with a decent agent.

When are they going to finally legalize marijuana…All the police do is waste our tax dollars on putting these people in jail and ruining someones name over marijuana instead of fighting real crime. Someone please tell these cops to get a life and stop robberies, murders, rapes, and terrorism…When it comes to marijuana 99% of people have done it, is doing it, or will end up tying it before they die!
