I think PJ having a background in psychology was a key ingredient to all his success. Detractors say that he always had big stars but he also dealt with big egos well in a way that previous coaches of those teams couldn’t. Getting close to finishing the book now – it’s a great read whether you’re a Bulls/MJ fan or not. Awesome inside information that most people don’t know.

Yeah, I think it just proves that a team has to be driven. We assume that “driven” means everyone gets along and has great chemistry and wants to win for each other. But the Bulls wanted to win as individuals as much as they did for others, and it worked somehow. Honestly, I already was a Phil Jackson fan, but the way he massaged egos in this book made me appreciate him even more.

Come on now. Smith actually does pretty fair job of looking at the home team critically, but you think a Chicago-based author is going to write some wild conspiracy theory as a book about the Bulls?

I have read it may times and i actually think it is pretty unbiased towards the bulls. Just imagine the stories that would of been written in a book from the season just gone by for the pistons. Somewhere up there Chuck Daly is shaking his head. We need to our old team’s values back.

I’m reading this book right now. You’re right about there being lots of good Pistons anecdotes. It’s surprising how much the Bulls’ players did not get along and just wanted individual stats and they could still win it all. It debunks the cliche that a team has to be like a family to succeed – however I’m only about halfway through the book so maybe that changes by the end of the season. Great read so far. By the way, I’m loving this book club. Loose Balls is an excellent oral history of the ABA – more on that next time.

If the book doesn’t mention the fact that the league let Detroit and Boston beat each other up and then officiated Detroit out of the series with the Bulls, then I’ll pass. Also, it might be worth mentioning that the TV ratings for the Pistons vs Portland the previous year were the lowest for sometime. Almost everyone wanted to see the Bulls play LA. LA’s series with Portland was just as sketchy as Detroit’s. As I recall they victimized Kevin Duckworth. The league made that matchup happen.
