That's absolutely true. I guess I just compartmentalize it separately in my head. I mean, you could also say who drafts the top talent is luck. A different lottery outcome and the Spurs have four fewer championships. But I happen to think of the lottery, health, and in-game luck as three different categories even if it makes sense to lump them.

Great stuff J.M. I can never get enough on the psychological impact those Pistons teams had on MJ.

I completely agree. What was the difference between the Heat and Mavericks this year? Almost nothing. The Mavericks won, and the Heat didn't. That's all.

I think you left out the biggest element of luck, even bigger than bounces of the ball and getting a favorable whistle: health.

And then, of course, there is the most understated thing every eventual champion has: luck. Every year, there are several teams that could be reasonably expected to win and only one of them does. However, more than half of all NBA champions were one game away from elimination. It's funny the stories that are written about how team x is just such a warrior or has what it really takes when it may well have been a few points away from being eliminated in the second round. Let's face it, the talent disparity (and toughness or whatever else) disparity in the league is not that great. Most of the time, the eventual winners are not the only team to have what it takes to win it all. They just got a couple lucky bounces or whistles at the right place and time. In the last ten years, the average NBA champion was 6 points away from being eliminated somewhere in the playoffs, most notably the 2002 Lakers and 2005 Spurs who each won an overtime game in a seven game series.
