Date myself but I remember the chapter on Kermit Washington was excerpted iirc in Inside Sport shortly after it's launch (I had subscriptions to both Inside Sport and Sport Magazine at the time). I went out and read the whole book and many of Halberstram's other books over the years. Great first selection and a reminder about how much race still affects the perception of the NBA.

Laser…i thought exactly the same thing. I was hoping for an official pistons planking club. The first rule of planking club would be that you cannot talk about it :-) On a serious note though the Jordan Rules is a good read if anyone is after a great insight into the inner sanctum of the Chicago Bulls. You get a good understanding of how much they really hated the pistons and how much of a**hole Jordan could be. I guess you can’t be the g.o.a.t without pi**ing someone off. Throughout the whole book you see how much a coach (good one) means to a team, not just on the floor but off it as well. Phil Jackson seemed to psychoanalyze his players and bring out the best in them and the book really is a great read especially for the younger guys that might of just missed out on the Jordan era.

You can’t go wrong with any Halberstam really, but Breaks is well worth tracking down. Probably the best sports book I’ve ever read.

I’ve read the Jordan Rules twice in the past. It is an excellent look at MJ and gives a lot of insight into his personality. The rest of the team has interesting moments as well throughout.

This book club idea is a very good one, even for non-lockout summers. One book I want to recommend is The Tao of the Jump Shot I read it years before but want to reread.
I will try to find Breaks of the Game when I’m back in Portland.
