he'll be a good owner. he can keep trying to get that downtown arena, but in the meantime he'll have a place for the wings to play.

Hi, Dan,
Let's assume for the moment that the Pistons are his "5th Priority" behind not only the Wings & Tigs, but also The Joe & The Palace, just as you write. Question: How has #6 fared? "Number Six?" you ask. Yeah: you didn't mention "Pizza! Pizza!" If Little Caesar is #6 and doing pretty good, you've gotta like how #5 is going to do to, right?
Illitch doesn't run the Tigers: Dombrowski does. Illitch told him to cut payroll at the end of 2009 - so we said goodbye to a couple of good guys instead of upping contracts. But when it came down to the season starting, who did he go get? Only "All-Star-To-Be" Valverde and "Mr. Professional-in-the-clubhouse" Damon. How do you reckon Mr. Illitch did that? I think I know the answer: by listening to Mr. Dombrowski.
JoeD is going to be part of this move. With Tom Wilson jumping over to Mr. Illitch's team some time ago, you've got to think Wilson (et al) saw this one coming. Can't you imagine this conversation at The Palace "water cooler" on or about 2/1/2010....
Tom Wilson: Joe, I'm going over to Illitch's to get things set up. Be patient: we'll get you over there as quick as possible.
JoeD: All right; good luck. And hurry, will ya? I'd rather work for someone who loves sports than the widow of someone who loved sports....
So even if the Pistons are #5 on the priority list, they won't be #5 on JoeD's list. They won't be #5 on Tom Wilson's list (maybe #2, but not #5).
As long as Illitch listens to JoeD like he has listened to JimmyD and DaveD (do you notice a pattern here?), #5 is fine.
Besides, I've seen that look in Mr. Illitch's eyes. No sports team is going to be lower than a building. He's a competitor at heart. Did you see him hoist The Cup? You don't think he'd like to be part of (and consider himself the main part! of) the O'Brien trophy?
Auburn Hills or Detroit, Illitch will keep the Michigan Pistons one of the premier sports teams in the world.
