Oracle, actually, Okur and Bynum are in the same situation.

Players who've been in the league three years or few are restricted free agents when their contracts end. This is Bynum's third year in the league.

The "Gilbert Arenas provision" prevents teams from offering free agents who've been in the league fewer than two years a contract starting at more than the mid-level exception. So, it doesn't apply to Bynum.

If, the Pistons convince Bynum to take the mid-level exception or lower -- which, granted, will be easier than convincing Okur in 2004 -- there won't be an issue.

But if Bynum has an offer for more, Detroit will have to part with another player in a sign-and-trade or to make cap room. It's the same situation as when Joe Dumars had to choose between Okur and Rasheed Wallace in 2004.

i never understood why you thought bynum would be like okur. Okur left because we were unable to pay him due to cap issues. there was no exception at the time that would allow to go over the cap and keep him, they only introduced that exception the next year
