Laimbeer to become a Pistons assistant?

By Dan Feldman - 4:54 pm | June 24th, 2009

Dave Cowens won’t return as a Pistons assistant next year, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. He will remain with the organization in another role.

So, that leaves an opening on the bench. And a certain former Shock coach is available.

UPDATE: From Dave D’Alessandro of the The Star Ledger (Hat tip: Dave Dial of Full Court Press):

Dave Cowens is walking away from Mike Curry’s staff in Detroit, and they’re saying the Pistons may try to get by with only two or three assistant coaches.

And Chris McCosky of the Detroit News offers some insight as to why Cowens was the oneto get the boot:

I am going to miss Dave Cowens. If you missed it, he’s been reassigned and will do some scouting and consulting for the Pistons. He was a very under-appreciated and under-used resource for the Pistons last year. Curry never really allowed Cowens to do much, which is both surprising and shameful. This is a hall-of-fame player, one of the 50 best players of all-time, a guy who was a player-coach for the Celtics and a successful head coach in Charlotte before enduring a couple of rough years in Golden State. To not tap into his knowlege, to not give him a voice, to me, was one of the biggest mistakes Curry made last season.

bill l.—would make and excellent head coach–he would fire the team up -were as curry did nothing in that area –you could see it in the players last year –im sorry to see amir gone -they never played him outside and hes a tru shooter

I’m sorry Curry needs to go. Why do the Pistons act like the team didn’t fall apart at the end of last year. From elite to can barely compete. Personally I like Curry, but he still hasn’t figured out DEFENSE wins championships !!!
